It implies that the knife came after the sword did.

I suppose based on some myths, there were indeed people who used swords before knives seemed to be mentioned, but historically, knives came first.

Alternatively, "刀" itself could mean knife, but to call a knife a "child version of a knife" makes even less sense.

I suppose the knife is a predecessor of the sword, though in that sense I don't see why they wouldn't use parent instead, since these things don't exactly "grow mature."

I imagine making short pieces of sharp stone is easier than a long piece of sharp stone (or even what that would be useful for), so I'll go out on a limb and say knives.
