The word "刀子" (child of sword/sword child/offspring of the sword/etc.)
It implies that the knife came after the sword did.
I suppose based on some myths, there were indeed people who used swords before knives seemed to be mentioned, but historically, knives came first.
Alternatively, "刀" itself could mean knife, but to call a knife a "child version of a knife" makes even less sense.

Not all swords become tiny knives you know, and if the knife was around longer than the sword, it would make the knife a pedophile.
