"My Parents Need To Earn My Respect"

It's kind of hard when you're Oedipus and you don't even know that your parents weren't your blood parents.

And yeah, you shouldn't murder your blood parent(s) just because they're dicks, but that's more common courtesy than a duty to your real parents.
  • I don't see any reason as to why one shouldn't murder their horrible parents that aren't helping you survive any more than murdering anyone that sucks just as much as them.
  • That's just because you're Ed, Ed.
  • "That's just because you're Ed, Ed."

    I suppose that's true.
  • It is true that you owe your parents a degree of respect for providing you with a roof over your head and such, assuming they weren't just horrible people.

However I never liked the idea that providing for your child automatically gives you license to treat them however else you want and still have their unconditional respect. There are parents who are good providers but still emotionally distant/abusive/whatever. Giving someone food and shelter doesn't make up for generally being a dick. At least not in my opinion.

Then again I'm probably just biased because I don't get along with my father. Yes, he provides for me, but as a person I've just never been fond of him and we fight constantly.
  • My parents are pretty great and I respect them and their wishes, but I don't think that I should have been required to respect them if they weren't good people.
  • Inside, too dark to read

Only a spoiled brat wouldn't love their parents for all the labor it objectively takes to provide that child with a safe home, every meal they eat, every doctor's visit, every toy, etc. "Being a dick" is totally subjective.

It's true that parents have duties beyond transferring material resources to their children, but these can be defined. "My parents are dicks!" is conveniently vague, so that a corrupt will can use it to mean anything that doesn't suit it.

Emotional abuse? Physical abuse? Sexual abuse?

    Fuck, I always knew my mother punching me in the face so much and calling me a whore all the time would turn me into a spoiled brat. ;_;

DAMMIT MV, YOU SHOULD BE GRATEFUL FOR THOSE BRUISES

    GRATEFUL I TELL YOU
  • It's subjective, Rott, yes. That's so whoever read my post could let their own personal standards fill in the rest.

Better than whining about my own complaints about my parents when others might not consider the issues a big deal, I think.

I dunno, maybe its just me and my fairly good life talking, but I don't think that resorting to the extremes of bad parenting helps the argument. Of course the parents that are abusive don't deserve respect. They're abusive. But what about those parents that genuinely are good to their kids. Or speaking from personal experience, my dad wasn't around at all. He's still a fairly nice guy and while I expect little from him I still respect him as a person. I dunno

Well, yeah, it's a completely different thing.

But what I was getting from Rottweiler's posts was that you always have duties to your parents, no matter what bad things they do to you, and I was responding to that.

Hmm... Yeah. Looking back I can see how one can come to that interpretation. I though he was talking about y'know regular everyday parents.

re earlier argument: Depends on what "everything" means.
  • Thread Hop.

I laugh at the premise. Heartily.
  • Respect as in "listen to them": only so long as you're not willing to get thrown out of the house.

Respect as in "treat as wise human being": agreed.  Not being a dismal failure does not make you worthy of praise.
