A game that is hard to learn and hard to master but is very fun to play. Well that is once you get past the
lethally steep learning curve.
You take control of a group of alcoholic, psychotic, retarded, violent, and deranged craftsmen 7 all told and start a settlement that you have to grow into a
disfunctional fortress/colony.
You have the job of micro managing a pack of these dwarves as they go about doing your will and building your fortress at a chosen spot and trying to survive. You can start the fort in any part of the chosen world except the ocean and face a plethora of fort murdering challenges.
First off are your dwarves. Temperamental at best, psychotic at worse. It is not unusual at all to have a dwarf flip out and begin murdering the denziens of your fort before stripping naked and running around outside until they die of thirst. Not to mention they are prone to being possessed or taken hold of by moods, spirits, what have you. If you do not scrape to their possessed needs they might flip out and murder your fort. Then we have nobles and law bringers. Fail to have demand met on time? The hammer selects a random crafts man and beats his brains out because he can. Often your nobles display idiotic tendencies and it is considered part of the game to "arrange" for an untimely demise of nobles who step beyond reason.
They are morbid and will craft and carve scenes of death on the walls and in their art. They make goods from various body parts as well as rocks and trees. Then there is disease, injury, and natural dwarven stupidity. You lose them to digging/building on the wrong side of something or not going where you intend them too.
Then there are the threats from the outside/inside worlds. As your fort grows you face regular and often multiple invasions, ambushes, attempted kidnapping of your children, and theft of your goods by the Goblins and their assorted allies. The relentless little buggers will happily grind themselves to death on your assorted death traps you have placed often spattering the local area with their body parts and blood. The same can happen to your dwarves.
Then there are the titans and other assorted monsters that will assail your fort and attempt to break in and murder everyone horribly. They are often sources of additional terror and misery for the survivors spreading or exhaling poisons that do things like make your dwarves various body parts rot off and then bleed to death. Among some of the assorted charming things.
Then we have the forgotten beasts. Basically titans from the under ground caverns that can invade your fort and spread misery and death. That is in addition to another host of various enemies that lurk in the cavern systems.
You can also end up at war with elves and humans who each make you miserable in their own "FUN" way.
Monsters, invasions, wars, forgotten beasts, insanity, and difficulties abound. But the fun of the game is making it work some how. No matter how fucked up it gets you can win out and have successful fort. Of course that is still party to luck and that is also part of the fun.
But perhaps the greatest threat of all to your fortress is when you get an "idea" for a mega project and do anything to make it happen. The results are often various and bizzare and can range from the awesome to the insane. Many a player has accidentally flooded their fort with lava or water killing everyone inside or caved in a floor killing every skilled miner, and other disasters that come with "ideas".
Despite all of this. The game is very fun, rather addictive and the fairly moddable. You can get your graphics tile sets or download a mod made by the community. The Creator of the game charges nothing for it and is continually updating and adding to the game.
It is hard and because it is hard it is fun.

Commando: Dunno never seen one for Eve. Eve is easy but boring as hell.
Fargle: You could try and see if the mouse support mod is up to date. It is honestly very easy to use the keyboard.
Chagen: Your opinion has been noted and rejected.
Ironhand, Phobia, and Mayday green are all good graphics packs.
has all sorts of goodies and instructions. I recommend checking it out.
Fargle: Well then no point in further comment then.
