Leveling up skills in Oblivion.

I'm currently using the rubber band trick to have my character sneak in a corner with the blades and the emperor nearby to get sneak up to 100 while doing other things (like typing this) so I can be that much better at going on killing sprees before even getting my first level up, but now that I'm a Journeyman in that skill (64 at the time of this posting), it's taking forever.

  • Can't you just hack instead?

XBox 360 version, and I don't know how to hack anyway. Plus I'd rather do this through means that are doable in-game.

Oblivion is fun if you have the PC version and can download mods that fix all the stupid things Bethesda did.

    Like the leveling system.

I use the Oblivion XP mod, which basically replaces the leveling system with a getting XP from killing stuff/doing quests and then being able to choose which skills and attributes increase when you level up.  It's nice.

Without it, leveling up is terrible.

Oh, and if you do it the way you're doing, you're going to end up with shitty attribute bonuses on level up since you're just increasing one skill.

^ I don't care if the attribute bonuses are shitty; I'm not optimizing, and I probably won't even complete the main quest like this; I just want to use this playthrough to sneak into people's houses, collect a fuckton of keys, and kill people before they know what hit them without actually accomplishing anything worthwhile.
  • Unfortunately, due to the complete lack of balance in Oblivion, there's absolutely no incentive to have a high sneak skill once you reach a high enough level, even if you want to be a sneaky character.  It's ridiculously easy to get enchanted equipment that gets you up to 100% chameleon, so you can do anything without getting seen.  Except I think attacking guards might still increase your bounty.  But they'll never arrest you anyway so it doesn't matter.

    66. :<

Lessee, three minutes to level up at this point . . . If I'm down here until 10:00, I might do it.

^ I don't pay much attention to what I can get and do later on. And I'd rather not do anything that cheap.

    EDIT: 67, 68

Acrobatics is one of the most pointless skills ever. along with the Mysticism skill.
  • Acrobatics is useful since you do lots of jumping.

Mysticism however is worthless, except that you need to raise it to get bonuses for Intelligence, which is one of the few stats that actually matters.

I kind of like Mysticism if only for the fact that I can detect people from afar when it's dark out, but it has little use otherwise.

And Acrobatics is good for positioning, and at Journeyman you can Dodge.

EDIT: 69. Heh, this is going faster than I thought it was.
  • But you don't need to use magic for that.  You can get a helmet that has detect life and nighteye as soon as you get out of the sewers.

And dodging attacks is mostly pointless.  You're better off just having good armor and carrying potions.  But acrobatics still helps you get around quicker, since you can jump over things instead of having to go around them.

I like to go at the base of hills and mash the jump button.

I like to make a 1 second Detect Life spell that way I can level up my Mysticism.

I like to mash the Auto-attempt button on the controller to level up my lockpick once I buy 20 stones worth of them.

^^ I'll have to look into that helmet. And I would also imagine you're better off sneaking up to an enemy and killing them before they react, whenever possible. I don't plan to get into many battle-intensive confrontations with this character anyway.

EDIT: I've heard "Please, sire. We can't stay here, we have to go.", "Not yet. Let me rest a moment longer." hundreds of times in the last few hours. And 70, 71.

^^ Leveling up your lockpicking skill has very little use though.  Once you're level 9 you can get the skeleton key, at which point you just mash the auto-attempt button and never have to worry about lockpicks again.  Or just play the minigame, since it's really easy even if you have a really low lockpick skill.  And raising lockpicking just gives you bonuses to Agility, which isn't terribly important to increase.

Really, like half the skills in the game are completely pointless and only seem to exist for flavor.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
Well yeah, that's the flaws of RPGs. Flavor.
  • Has friends besides tanks now
I like flavor, even when it's useless.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
    Metagamers and Perfectionists hate flavor.

    Although I am neither.
  • Has friends besides tanks now
    Me neither.

    72.

^^^^ More like, one of the flaws of Oblivion is that Bethesda didn't bother to balance the skills.

Lockpicking is useless because of the skeleton key.
Speechcraft and Mercantile are useless because of the Charm and Fortify Skill spells (which require far fewer levels in their respective skills to make full use of).
Light Armor is strictly inferior to Heavy Armor when both skills are at 100.
Blunt weapons are generally worse than Blade weapons, and there's less of them too.
Restoration isn't terribly useful apart from 1 second Fortify Skill spells, since healing spells cost too much MP to be useful and the potions you make from Alchemy are way better.
Weapons in general suck compared to Destruction magic, though that's only if you also have really high Intelligence and Willpower, so it's not always worthless to use a weapon.
Sneak is useless because of the Chameleon enchantment.
Trying to avoid attacks in general is pointless because you can get 100% reflect damage and 100% reflect magic at the same time, but of course that's probably a little too cheap for most people...
Personality attribute has no effect on anything except speechcraft and mercantile stuff, and you can make a Fortify Personality 1 Second 100 Points spell for those situations if you should need it.

    Etc.

^^ Magic strikes once again with its power to imbalance everything it touches, am I right?

    73, 74, 75! Just a little more!

^^ Luck is... well yeah it's actually useless.  100 Luck gives you +20 to all of your skills (except Acrobatics and Athletics), but it won't raise them past the cap of 100 anyway, so it doesn't matter too much except early on.  However, to get 100 Luck you'd need to be level... 40-something, at which point you'd probably have already maxed out all the important skills.

    ^ Indeed.
  • Morrowind's better, anyway.

    /semi-shitpost

  • Morrowind... had exactly the same problems as Oblivion except it was slower and had even more shitty useless skills.  And Oblivion's version of the GameBryo engine is much better and more suitable for modding and such.
  • It also had the infinitely more interesting game world and in-game lore, and with the proper graphics mods in place, the graphics are arguably better than those in Oblivion.

From the looks of Skyrim, though, I think that game's likely to trump both of these.

  • The world in Morrowind was... still kind of boring, really...  And really, even with mods it still looks worse than Oblivion.  At least, looks worse than Oblivion with mods.

Dunno about Skyrim since I haven't been paying much attention to it since my computer won't be able to handle it.
  • Vorpy: Acrobatics and Mysticism are gone in Skyrim.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Elder Scrolls is bad and you should feel bad for liking it.

    000
At least the games feel like actual worlds, not like WoW where the world feels like a glorified arena.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
I only like platformers and sidescrollers. So I guess I shouldn't judge.
  • My memory is fuzzy is there a mod that replaces oblivion's character models to something better, either way I will always prefer Morrowind over Oblivion for feeling like an rpg over an action game. Also the mod Don is most likely refering to is the Morrowind Graphics Extender which allows things like HRD, Bloom, SSAO, full screen AA, better shadows, etc. all at the same time, which can get you things like this http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/images/26348-1-1304178064.jpg and this http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/images/26348-1-1304177939.jpg
