"You're just rationalizing"

We Played Some Open Chords and Rejoiced, For the Earth Had Circled the Sun Yet Another Year
What the hell is this supposed to mean? Is it a bad thing to have reasonable justifications for the things you do?

Depends on what you are rationalize and how close the other party is to hitting their "reason limit".
  • The problem is that sometimes people have utterly insane "justifications" for their actions.
  • It's usually used to mean that the reasons you are giving for an action are not the real reasons, which are far less logical.
  • Too bad that "plausible" means different things to different people.

Creationists think that the Earth being only 4000 years old is plausible, after all. Even though it isn't. But since the definition depends on the user's beliefs of what "logical" means....
  • This statement is also just used as a sort of thought-terminating cliche for whenever a person disagrees with another person's argument.  It would be alright if people only ever said it in response to justifications that really were kind of outrageous, or justifications that there are legitimate reasons to believe aren't a person's true reasons for something, but... it's not used that way a lot of the time.

It often carries with it an implicit accusation of confirmation bias.  The general idea is:

    - Personal desire
    - Now must retroactively justify foregone conclusion
    - Willful ignorance or improper weighting of priorities to make oneself look right
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
If you rationalize too much, you could end up not listening to any contrary arguments, which is always a bad thing.
