Who would write something like this?

Why do people enjoy being depressed?

Doesn't real life depress them enough already?

  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
The writing quality in that story is what depresses me.

Because we do not read stories to feel good.

    We read stories to feel

    Well, that one sucks, so....
  • I like turtles.
^^ But why would you deliberately design something to evoke such undesirable feelings?

I'm pretty sure that I, for one, enjoy fiction to enjoy fiction.
  • Sometimes, depressing yet wonderfully written works can be enjoyable.

^^No, I'm pretty sure the word you're searching for is "depressing."
  • The question being asked seems to be the purpose of tragedy. The possibilities that come to mind are that it's something people find interesting, it's cathartic, and it might appeal to schadenfreude. Can't be sure what's more common, but I'd bet any would apply to someone out there.

I've seen people say that they like to cry every now and then. That's not something I completely understand, but there you are.
  • Depressing works can be enjoyable, Turtle, if they have good plots, characters, and overall writing skill backing them up.

Idealism can be annoying after a while.
  • I think you're confusing idealism with optimism? Having ideals doesn't necessarily mean you expect good results every time.

For once, I actually agree with Chagen to an extent kind of (no offense Chagen).

Then again, considering I'm an angst whore... yeah.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
It would be boring if every story was ALL HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY, ALL THE TIME.
  • I like turtles.
I'm not talking about the tone, I'm talking about the antagonist ultimately winning.
  • They're better when everyone loses.
  • I actually like that there are stories out there with unhappy endings. I'd wish they were more common so I'd actually feel more surprise when a story pulled a happy ending out of its ass at the last minute.

    ^^ Nope.

Er... ninja'd so my arrows point to the wrong post, but this works too.
  • You can change. You can.
The antagonist isn't always the bad guy, you know...

Also, sometimes a story can reaffirm life without being depressive and have the antagonist win. Watchmen anyone?
  • Though, the "villain" is always the bad guy.

So... not sure what specifically Turtle meant.
  • I like turtles.
The bad guy.  The guy with evil intentions.  Sometimes wants to take over the world, other times just wants to destroy it.

"For once, I actually agree with Chagen to an extent kind of (no offense Chagen)."

Same. The emotions that one feels while viewing a depressing work can be enjoyable, although I can't adequately explain the sort of emotional high I get from being sad or depressed, or apply Gelzo's explanations to myself; I can't justify it under schadenfreude or catharsis. I suppose catharsis is closest to that in a way, but I wouldn't call it emotional purging because it doesn't really relieve tenseness so much as add to it, which, again, I enjoy for some reason.

I guess I'm just weird, then, in that I only derive happiness from happiness.

    What do you mean?

It's from Ur-Quan Masters. The main antagonist aliens from the story have two branches, one race that wants to enslave all life in the universe so the other races can't kill them, and one race of aliens who want to annihilate all other life in the universes so the former aliens can't enslave them.

Do I have to go and re-quote Doctor Who?

OK, fine, I will...again: (Sad) is like happy for deep people.

It's catharthic and beautiful sometimes. And sometimes a bad guy's vicotry doesn't entail sadness. It normally entails lack of empathy, but that's just me.

Huh, I thought you were making fun of people who try to be "deep" but come off as pretentious idiots.

sometimes a bad guy's vicotry doesn't entail sadness

If he's really a bad guy, his victory tends to involve murder and/or enslavement.  Both of which make me sad.

Evil is never beautiful, and it's even less so in victory.
  • You can change. You can.

Eh, the quote works like that in context, but I like it. I simply think that sad in fiction doesn't really entail sad me in real life. Maybe it's because it's hard for me too get attached to most characters. -shrug-

@Turtle: Evil is never beautiful. But, like I said, sometimes you just don't give a shit about the heroes. (Evangelion, anyone?)
  • Fics where the villain wins can work depending on how they're handled.  A story in which the villain defeats the heroes but does so at so great a personal cost to themselves that they can never recover, for instance, can still turn out pretty optimistic and even touching, though I don't know how much it really counts as a "The Villain Wins" ending.  But yeah, super dark "You and your friends are dead and being skinned alive" gloomwanks are pretty lame.
