Edmania

Courtesy of Wiktionary:

"Used to form a word indicating a compulsion or obsession."

So what does Edmania even mean? Is it an obsession for Eds? If you have it, would you orgasm / faint / have a heart attack / whatever when you hear about Ed Edd and Eddy? What if someone with Edmania came to TVTropes and died over how many Eds there were? It just doesn't make any sense, and that just bugs me.

There are several Fast Eddies, aren't there?  One could be a huge fan of all of them or something.

Well, there's an assload of Fast Eddies, but only one on TVT, unless you also count Fast Edmania, then there's lame, boring, not-so-fast regular Edmania, then Edmond Dantes, then his way cuter twin or alter-ego or something, Kawaii Edmond Cutiepants or whatever the fuck he's called, and then... Some other Eds, maybe.

    It's a pandemic.

    Also, what the fuck.

I don't know who those other people are.

I can't seem to find the thread in TVT where people were asking what you're handle is about (not the one Diamonnes started, IIRC it had something to do with Blackmoon thinking his own handle is fucked up based on how a black moon would look) but I made it up based on how my English name is Ed and a mania(c) in Japan is used in relation to specialist hobbies and interests, like otaku, but far less offensive and generally assumed to be more in control and not excessively enthusiatic.
  • Mania is not a japanese word, nor are its colloquial connotations specifically or even primarily japanese. stop being a fucking weeaboo. Even in colloquial usage what you're saying is far more in evidence in the west. Look up beatlemania for one thing.

The word derives from the Greek "μανία" (mania), "madness, frenzy"[2] and that from the verb "μαίνομαι" (mainomai), "to be mad, to rage, to be furious".[3]

  • "Mania" isn't a Japanese word as much as "sushi" in English isn't.

I am aware of what it means in English as well, though it seems to have a meaning that seems to speak of more extreme fans.
  • The word you're looking for is "Hobbyist". Alternatively you could have simply used the myriad and varied terms that already exist for your hobbies of choice to describe fellow participants, such as guitarist for guitar players, or "Runner" to describe people who engage in all forms of sport related to propelling yourself forward with the legs.

Besides that, perverting the language and its connotations purely so you can claim your handle is japanese influenced is just the mark of a god damned obsessive anyway, so you should have used otaku to begin with.
  • ""Mania" isn't a Japanese word as much as "sushi" in English isn't."

    ...What.
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.

    ...

He's citing the usage of a Greek loanword by the Japanese as justifying and/or informing his choice of username.

He may be an otaku but I don't see how that's relevant here; it's not like other people haven't taken loanwords from other languages for usernames before.
  • Except the word has a defined english usage that is so similar to the japanese one as to make their variation on the theme irrelevant. It smacks of square peg round hole, forcing something to be 'japanese' when it really, really isn't. Again, I cite beatlemania, which provides a western example with the exact same connotations.

I only stated what I made my username with. I didn't actually know of the word in English before the Japanese use, which is more or less the same. It doesn't have to be interpreted as a Japanese name.

In fact, as far as the whole handle goes, it would be foolish to consider it a Japanese name, because part of it isn't actually possible in that language if one tries to go for absolute accuracy.
