Disrespect to dead forum-goers as a bannable offense.

Back on this old YGO forum I used to go to one of our semi-moderator/deck builders on there recently passed away. His parents logged onto the IRC channel and notified us that in his will to let us know about it so we would know that he won't be coming back. One of the replies from another deck builder was "Good fucking riddance." while the Schadenfreude YT animation was posted as well, and an admin immediately permabanned the guy from the IRC channel, AND the forum. I can understand that most people did not like the guy because he was a bit of a metagame elitist when it came to deckbuilding, and that bugged some casual deckbuilders on that site.

For some reason though, I don't think that was worth a permanent ban, since the person was dead and it shouldn't count as a personal attack or flaming since....he's dead. Then somebody told me that you should respect the dead and it's very offensive to applause the death of a fellow forum-goer.

What are your stances on this IJBM? If somebody you disliked on this forum died, how would you react? If somebody you liked passed away on this forum and another person was "dancing on their grave" what would be the proper measures to take against them?

  • Honestly, if anyone here died and I found out about it, I'd be sad, regardless of how I felt about them, and I felt if someone did start grave dancing, I don't know if they should be banned for it (although I wouldn't be opposed to it), but fuck them.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    That... that is pretty horrible.

I think that permaban was definitely deserved.
  • I don't think he should have been banned. Being disliked and thought of as an asshole is one thing though.

While I wouldn't like it if someone said "Good Fucking Riddance" if someone here made a thread saying how I was dead, I wouldn't care if the got banned or not....cause I'd be dead.

Saying that to the dead person's parents is pretty fucking low.

When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
I'd rather have him stay but make the moderators keep "good fucking riddance" as his sig.

    ^ Yes.
  • It's not classy.
  • You can change. You can.

Yeah, there comes a point at which you can pretty conclusively say, "That was a dick move", and he kinda did that by saying what he said to the deceased person's parents.
  • Not only his parents, but all the people in the community who cared about him. Generally speaking, such a glaring display of lack of tact is a strong indication that a person is not capable of behaving properly in this said social environment. While I don't know if I'd applied a permaban had I been in their position, I wouldn't say it was a particularly harsh measure.
  • There are just some things you don't do, and you should be prepared to face the consequences if you feel like doing it.

    They permabanned him immediately?

    Good fucking riddance.

    -bans TMA-
  • I don't think that counts as irony, but okay.

    No, it counts.

Hm, although maybe it would only really count if I got banned for making that comment? But then wouldn't that be congruency instead?

    I suppose it's somewhat iffy.
  • Irony: One of those words that probably has a meaning, but no one can agree on just what it is.
  • ~♥YES♥~! I *AM* a ~♥cupcake♥~! ^_^
No, I'm pretty sure it has a solid meaning. It just becomes disagreed upon when someone makes an un-ironic statement and claims it's irony, then defends that it actually is ironic by perverting the definition.

Sort of like I just did.

Hey my Nakama, I think Weeaboo is ironic, in a moe way.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
That statement was clearly a reconstruction of deconstructions.

While I think the ban was justified, the angle of "his parents logged on because it was in his will" makes me think this may have just been trolling.
  • ~♥YES♥~! I *AM* a ~♥cupcake♥~! ^_^
That was what I thought at first as well, although that poster's response was nasty enough for me to remove any care about the legitimacy of the tale.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
I am pretty sure he's not trolling.
  • I wouldn't talk ill of the dead.  Unless they were total and complete bastard like Bin Laden or something.
  • So am I allowed to say bad things about Scrye yet? Has time healed that wound?
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
That was off-topic, but....sure I guess, since Scrye doesn't go here, and isn't dead.
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
I wouldn't refrain from saying bad things about Scrye even if he was dead. Hell, I'd do it especially if he is dead.

But knowing myself, I probably wouldn't do so anyway.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
    right....
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
To be more serious and more on-topic: It's a very, very dickish thing to do, but I wouldn't say that it should be bannable. Or better said, it shouldn't be worth a perma-ban. I don't consider someone who makes light of another person's death a pleasant person, but a perma-ban would be a bit too much.

I'm not sure how I would react if a poster, I don't like, would die. The fact that he stops posting is rather pleasant, but when it comes with the death of this poster, I highly doubt that I'd be happy about it. Also, I probably would be a bit shocked, since it's not something I'd expect to happen.

So, my best guess is that I'd be rather neutral. I'm not so dickish to think "good riddance", but I'd be too distant to have any larger negative feelings.
  • Perma-bans are justified. He knew exactly what he was doing and did it anyway.
  • I'd be pretty sad if any of you died, though I don't think I'd call for a perma-ban if someone actually said "good riddance," as cold as that is.  Then again, I really don't believe in perma-bans.
