The community I grew up with splintering apart

When I was a kid, and Homestar Runner was still updating on a regular basis, I was involved with the Homestar Runner Fanstuff Wiki, basically a fanfiction repository for Homestar Runner. During the time it was active, it was the web community that I was a part of (hell, that was where I first came up with the screen name you know me by today), and it had a large and lovely community built up around it. There were boundless in-jokes, much internally-referential writing, and even a few bona-fide memes.

But after a while, the sheer buildup of bad and uncompleted stuff became too much for quality control to take care of, so it was decided that the entire wiki would undergo a bit of downtime while they deleted all the crap. After a while, it would be put back up fresh as a daisy.

527 days. That's how long the purging took.

By the time the purging was done, most of the community had left, and a month or two after the wiki went back up, internal conflict led to the wiki being completely closed to new edits, in March 2010. There are some folks from the old community still hanging around, but I'm not beating around the bush; it's dead.

That isn't to say we didn't try to keep things going; during the main wiki's downtime, we even set up an alternate wiki called the Wiki User Wiki, in which we basically just did whatever we wanted based on the sensibilities we'd developed during our tenure at the Fanstuff Wiki. But now that's slowed to a crawl, too.

Looking back on it now (I just realized that it's been a year since then), it somehow seems even more heartbreaking than it was back then. I miss those guys a lot. Rainer, Kinsey, Joshua, StinkomanK, TotalSpaceShipGuy3, PrincessHomestar, Jenny, Chwoka, JCM, Super Sam, Marshieman, and so many more.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

  • Pass the beers around, sir. This is one we can all drown our sorrows in.
  • This has sort of happened with me, except I was there at the beginning, and it is still alive and well, but changed beyond what I thought possible. I'll never be as connected to it as I was at the start.
