On TV Tropes, a long time ago.
In the really old days, they were mostly drama-free, as well.
Though most of them were not very long.
Also, Chagen, while I'm not endorsing threadshitting here, I don't think that's why people do it. I think it's partly because your threads tend to be about personal issues that nobody else is interested in discussing or has anything to say about, and partly because you tend to include flame bait in some of your OPs, and partly because people are just being jerks.
Ummm we had them on a regular basis too, they just weren't as common. Also depends on what you find serious. They were on-topic even though they were not about pressing issues.
And actually, they were mostly quite jokey, still, though they had some serious posts.
But wonderposting and flame warring came later.
