Our spaceships could go at 8-10% of the speed of light right now..

Glaives are better.
Project Orion, a nuclear propulsion system, could get a mission to Alpha Centauri within 44 years. It could get humans or a probe anywhere in the solar system within a matter of months. It had Freeman Dyson and Carl Sagan working on it. This system could have used nuclear warheads as a means of disarmament. This is all using 1960s technology.

... And the UN ruined it.

This bugs me.

  • And this is why I don't respect the UN.
  • Glaives are better.
Also, Obama cut NASA's budget. So, no more shuttles.
  • ^^People that don't bother to actually read sources are almost amusing. Almost, because it leads to shit like evolution denial.
  • I'm absolutely sure that this project would have worked exactly as it was planned with absolutely no hitches whatsoever, just like every other optimistic project of this kind.
  • Glaives are better.
Even if it didn't succeed, at least we'd have some means of going to SPACE. Which we can't quite do anymore, considering that we're retiring our shuttles. Now we'll have to hitch a ride in order to send astronauts anywhere.

    CRIMINAL SCUM!
Right because there aren't any other important things going on in America. And it's not like we're in a budget crunch or some shit like that.

    /sarcasm mode.
  • Manned space travel is overrated anyways.  With unmanned stuff you can actually go to Jupiter and such.
  • ~♥YES♥~! I *AM* a ~♥cupcake♥~! ^_^
The UN strikes again! How DASTARDLY!!!

    Cue-bey
I think people would be uncomfortable about the number of nukes they'd need to detonate.

On the other hand Designated Orion Launch Testing Sites is my favourite nonexistant acronym in the world.

Which is why things that deserve to get gutted aren't, amirite?
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Like NASA? The agency that's delayed the ISS for what, seven years? Not wasteful in the slightest, no sir.

OP: Yes, it sure is horrible that we can't test nuclear weapons aboveground anymore. I'm sure a project that might have theoretically worked would have made it totally worth it.
