"Then don't X."

It has to be one of the easiest solutions to some of the most notorious threads here, and a hellish majority of them.

I don't like this anime. "Don't watch it."

I hate pop music. "Don't listen to it."

I hate this person. "Then ignore them."

I dislike iPods. "then don't use them."

I hate furries. "Then ignore them."

Pineapples are disgusting. "Then don't eat them."

Twilight sucks. "Then don't pay attention to it."

I hate the sun. "then don't go outside."

I hate my life. "Then die."

It is the most simple solution to some of the most common problems, and I don't know why people don't just do it. I can see why they complain about things they have no control over (like the sun), but beyond that, they usually use the "but it's everywhere/unavoidable/always there/inevitable/impossible" or some other similar excuse to justify them simply not eating pineapples or ignoring what the hatedom says about their favorite show. It also has to do with self control, where people don't feel like they should have to do anything in order to deal with the things they don't like, and desire for something that isn't them to change it.

  • I hate pop music. "Don't listen to it."

Twilight sucks. "Then don't pay attention to it."

I hate the sun. "then don't go outside."

These 3 are not always possible. People blare pop music all the times, people are still talking about Twilight in public and I kinda have to go outside to do stuff.

  • Just don't look at responses like this, then.
  • Goddamn furries also pop up goddamn everywhere.

Then ignore them. Unless they are actively trying to annoy you, then you are fucked.
  • I try, but that doesn't stop me from being a little annoyed.

Where do the furries pop up? If you have an ignore list you can do that. Unless they are in real life and frequent the places you do, like your house or your bedroom.
  • @OP: Then how about you ignore the people who say stuff like this?

^ Because this is a thread, and I made this thread to discuss this.

Also because I annoy myself with this response every time I want to complain about something.
  • It's not the furries themselves, but rather the works that they generate. The fandom has a high density of Mary Sues, self-inserts, and god-awful art and gay/fetish porn.

It's not always possible to avoid seeing it when you're looking for other things. I don't waste much time raging about it, but trying to ignore it doesn't do much either.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
I agree on some terms, but how the hell am I supposed to avoid crappy pop music when it blares out of my friend's radio 24/7? And besides, if it's a work we want to see improvement in, one could politely request for an opportunity to aire their grievances and suggest what they think would make the work better.

Ah, well I usually have the "-furry" tag when I search for fanworks I am interested in.

The other thing is that, in a lot of cases, just telling someone not to do something doesn't really address whatever underlying thing led them to that point in the first place, i.e, why they don't like furries. Otherwise, it's just suppressing something that's going to come up again later, or at the very least remain in the back of that person's mind.

Is it a legitimate problem solver though? In most cases it does but some people have issues with it still, and I can see why if they want to know WHY they don't.

That reminds me, are rants/vent threads discouraged from being posted since it's hard to want to discuss them?
  • Maybe I just associate it with behaviorist psychology, a doctrine I despise.
  • They're somethin' else.
    FUCK 'EM UP!!
  • I thoguth this was going to be complainging about the stock Mad Lib phrase "Don't X" like "Then don't die" or "don't get caught"
  • "gay/fetish porn"

And this is bad, why? The homophobia is unsettling.

It wasn't drawn for you, don't look at it.

The thought of it annoys him. If I had a beloved straight character that I envisioned as being with a girl character since that's the way the series established it, I would get annoyed at the thought of him getting pegged in the asshole. It isn't homophobia.
  • This is why I go for the Everyone Is Mildly Bisexual belief.
  • There's nothing homophobic about not enjoying gay porn.
  • Visualize this: Your sexuality is like a leaf that sways back and forth from straight to gay until it eventually lands, usually somewhere closer to one than the other, although sometimes it just lands in the middle.

What does that have to do with anything Chagen? If a character in a work of fiction is established as straight, that's what they are. Straight.

Gelzo: Your post seem to imply that gay porn was bad. Since you said the furry fandom is bad in part by it.

Saturn: So I never get annoyed at seeing slash.
  • either Everyone Is Bi or there are No Bi Sexuals
  • I said "Goddamn furries also pop up goddamn everywhere." and that I couldn't be stopped from being "a little annoyed" by this. I never said the furry fandom was "bad," I'm just generally annoyed by having to see some of the content they produce, including gay porn. Being annoyed with furries and gay porn doesn't mean that I think they're bad, they just clash with my tastes.
