The way I can't read or watch rape scenes anymore

edited 2011-04-28 09:07:32 in General
If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
without freezing up and shaking.

Hell, even things that just resemble rape cause this reaction in me- I can't even continue with Rosario + Vampire until my friend gets back and tells me what happened during the Flower Offering arc.

Does anyone else have this sort of reaction to things?

    Not to rape scenes.

In fact thinking about not to any specific scene I can think of, the closest is I can not look at any of those "fail compilations" on youtube as I really don't want to see limbs bent/broken in the wrong way.

Nah, not to rape scenes in particular- just any sort of situation.

Thanks for that image, though :/

So what led to that change?

^^Any sort of situation? That is incredibly broad. It must make watching/reading a lot of media fraught with worry?

Also sorry for the mental image.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
I think this is the reasoning behind trigger warnings.

(I don't have any examples to share, sorry.)

"So what led to that change?"

Stuff that's best not shared on a public forum.
    ... The hell's a trigger warning, Khwarizmi?

"^^Any sort of situation? That is incredibly broad. It must make watching/reading a lot of media fraught with worry?"

Not any situation, but many common ones, yes. That is why I do not consume much media.

Ah, not a Penny Arcade reader, then, I take it?

Trigger warnings.  Sadly oft-derided by people who miss the point in them.

An example may be found at the start of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, which warns readers that it contains a casual discussion of rape and a depiction of intense bullying.

No... The archive's too long D=

Oh. Hmmm... Why are these not in more common usage?
  • Possibly because in a lot of non-porn related media with a "serious" rape depiction, the scene is intended for shock value. A warning beforehand would diminish the impact in those cases.

(I'm not agreeing with the practice, just a wild guess as to why they might not be used in some cases.)

I have the same reaction (well, with the addition of suddenly not wanting to breathe) to specific depictions of rape.

    ...

I think the mental health of viewers should come before that.

I think another reason why Trigger Warnings aren't more common is perhaps for the majority, they just don't think about the consequence that people may have such reactions to the subject matter, as for them it is ok.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    -sigh-

    That's a good point...

I can't help but wish it wasn't that way though.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
I think the only way would be to ensure greater understanding of those who are negatively affected by depiction/implications of such nature. It also depends on the community, as in online communities where there are more 'high profile/visible' rape victims there is more knowledge and understanding and therefore more likelihood of using trigger warnings.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    Yes... You are right.

    Hmmmm...

I don't really know what to do then, other than to continue to not consume very much media.

There are some sites that list Trigger Warnings. For example this one it isn't complete and full but every little helps. I suppose you could also create a thread on the TvTropes forum asking other tropers to help create a list of media where trigger warnings would be appropriate?

Thank you very much for that link and suggestion.

I will go do that now, as a matter of fact.

    Thank you :)
  • Pissed me off when Penny Arcade fans tried to turn Trigger warnings and rape culture into thier own stupid memes. I lost a lot of respect for the Penny Arcade authors too, sadly, but that's not worth talking about here lest I derail this.

I can't watch rape scenes any more either, except by "any more" I mean I was always queasy about it. But recently I've just gone "to hell with it", and my tolerance for it's gone into the no-zone. Stories can have rape in them, but if it has a rape scene I can't help but feel it's voyeuristic on the part of the work's producers.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
I am ignorant... What does Penny Arcade have to do with this?
  • They're somethin' else.
For all intents and purposes, i probably should tense up and freeze watching/reading these too, considering past experience. but most modern video game deaths resemble rape anyway, so I feel nothing.
  • "most modern video game deaths resemble rape anyway"

    ...they do?

Just ask Link and the Redeads.
  • Regarding Penny Arcade, it's the Dickwolves Saga: http://debacle.tumblr.com/post/3041940865/the-pratfall-of-penny-arcade-a-timeline TV Tropes is mentioned on there! WOOO TV TROPES! WOOO!

Note that with everything written down in that big long post, it might make the whole thing seem more dramatic and fast paced than it actually was. It's like a timer ticking down. Really, it was just something that got out of hand. Tycho and Gabe coul've quashed it in the crib, and it's pretty much thier fault it spiralled out fo control. I personally don't believe that they approved of rape at any point, but I critisize thier mishandling of a subject so sensitive. Fans such as Hooded Miracle are the real turds in the story, though. It also turned into two debates: Free Speech vs. Being nice to rape victims, and the two issues got confused by too many people.

@ Cygan: Just a dumb Internet controversy, really.  Penny Arcade upset some people a while back when they featured a strip which referenced rape (in a negative light, not as the punchline, although they had made rape jokes in strips prior to that).  They responded to criticism of the strip by making fun of the criticism in a rather tasteless manner which missed the point completely.  This caused more controversy, won't bore you with the details, but anyway, Mike made a blog post which mocked trigger warnings.  (They've since acknowledged that they misunderstood the issue, but it was too little, too late for the people they offended.)

    They're somethin' else.
    @ Edmania:

See also: Most Resident Evil 2 death scenes, (most survival horror deaths, anyway), death via melee in FPS, Shun Goku Satsu.

Especially Shun Goku Satsu. dat black screen.

    ^... I'm a bad person... -blush-

Well, i'm not a survival horror fan or an FPS fan (though I don't really think death via melee tends to resemble rape, what some people tend to do as a prank to the corpses does however) and Shun Goku Satsu (at least the ones where the hits focus on...lower areas) looks more like one is kneeing someone in the crotch really fast.

    Me too, Vorpy.
  • But you never had any to begin with.
I have the same reaction to rape depictions. Same goes for depictions of suicide/self-harm.
