Theocratic Fascism

edited 2011-04-27 14:18:59 in General
I'm trying to figure this one out but is Theocratic Fascism possible? from my basic research I've gathered that Fasicim is by nature a secular ideology. So is Theocratic Fascism possible or real or just a form of melding two undesirable aspects of the right-wing into a propaganda term?

If by the capital F you mean Italian Fascism, no. The Fascist party was based on a sort of Enlightenment nationalism. To make things more confusing, its official philosopher, Giovanni Gentile, was a sort of agnostic Idealist (which Plato would call self-contradictory), who ascribed to Man as a collective the position Hegel gave the Christian God.

I'm reminded of "Islamofascism", but that's probably more of a political slur than an actual ideology.
  • sorry did I mess up syntax? Iknow fascism hasit's origins in Italy but is there something specirfic i'm missing?

@Bobby: Yes, it's a dumb neologism, trading on the sloppy and emotionally loaded idea that anything that fights liberalism is fascism.

Tnu, the capital letter implies "Fascist" means the party of that name, rather than a generic ideology.

    Thought so.

thanks Rott that is good to know but you have to remember the right-wing are equally as guilty with things like "communist" and "socialist" unless your talkig about classical liberalism and not modern liberalism.

Pretty sure I've heard "Islamofascist" used by both people on the left and people on the right over here.

Communism and socialism are real ideologies, though I think that a number of people on the American right have a tendency to misuse the words, probably in an overzealous attempt to avoid a repeat of what happened in Russia and China.
  • im a bit confused on the difference myself so I would like a good history lesson on that or at least semantics or phiosiphy lesson it'simportant toknow the difference.

@Tnu1138: Who said anything about guilt? It's also true that if you call someone a capital-C Communist, by the rules of English grammar you're accusing them of belonging to a party with that name, rather than agreeing with Marx's philosophy or anything like that.
  • well ok maybe a poor choice of words on my part Imean guilty as in they do the same exactwi thing ona  different set of words. From my understanding you seem to be refrencing Leninist communismin this scenario correct Rott?
