Being called a right-winger

edited 2011-04-24 11:36:34 in General
It's just stupid! I'm sick of getting this accusation just because of my belief in free market Austrien school economics. Why does that have to mean I'm also a Fundamentalist social bigot?

Well, that is economically right-wing. That doesn't make you socially right-wing, though.
  • Exactly my fiscal philosiphy doesn't make me any more of right winger then my social ideals make me a left-winger.

Overall, it seems that you're a right-libertarian... Which is fine. Feel politically marginalised? Join the club! I'm a bonafide socialist; everyone hates us!
  • Because you never know what you might see.
Don't stress out about it too much.  They're vague categories, they're not going to describe your beliefs perfectly.  It may even be a good thing if they don't, since it at least suggests you're thinking for yourself.

Besides, these things are relative.  You can be a conservative to some people and a liberal to others.  People who disagree with you will often perceive you to be whatever they're not.
  • I have nothing against you personally I jsut do't trust that system as it relies on coercion against property and association.

I could debate you on what qualifies as coercion when it comes to taxation, and I have no problems with free assembly... But I'm feeling more in the mood for camaraderie here. You're a decent guy, Tnu.
  • thanks JHM that means alot to me. I'm just statingmy issues with it no need to makethigns hostile.

I'm not. I was just being as honest as possible. It's kind of my schtick.

Or not "schtick"... It's just what I do.

Anyway, yeah, Sharron Angle is a right-winger; you aren't. Discussion is moot.
  • Who's she? I've also seen this accusation lev eld at those such as Major Tom.

Sharron Angle was the Republican nominee for Senate in Nevada. To put this in context...

Whether or not one wishes for social security to be privatised, using Chile—when under the murderous and disastrous rule of Augusto Pinochet, by the way—as a justifying example is just in bad taste. She did. Furthermore, in defending a total ban on abortion, she stated that pregnant rape victims whose health was in danger should try to "make lemons into lemonade."

    That is a true right-winger.

Because you never know what you might see.
Major Tom is not a left winger.  His views correspond more closely with those traditionally regarded as right wing in the American political spectrum than those traditionally regarded as left wing, so he is naturally regarded as the former, not the latter.

Now, it's questionable how much use the categories are, but to call Major Tom right wing, as the term is commonly understood, is not inaccurate.  I would not be surprised if he considered himself right wing, though I haven't asked.
  • He is not strictly right wing as farasi've seen he'sonly economically right. You are falling in to the trap that you are either right or left wing which is frankly bull.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
No, I'm not.  But economically right is typically regarded as a type of right wing, hence the name.

These are not terms with clear definitions.  They are relative.  But by the usual American understanding of the term, Tom appears to hold what is commonly regarded as a right wing view.

Major Tom is a right-winger if the term is used, as it typically is, to refer to a set of viewpoints generally regarded today as being on the conservative side of a one-dimensional political spectrum in the United States.
