  • That message amuses me more than it should.

That said, I'd be a bit disappointed if I were banned, since it'd mean no KHSWO.

    They're somethin' else.
    -pat pat-

EDIT: Why am I reminded of game over screens?
  • To me it seems kind of a dick move to prevent someone from even viewing a wiki if they're not a hacker or a repeat vandal and it wasn't an accident.  But then again I've never run a web page.
  • Looks like the google bounce doesn't exist anymore.
  • No rainbow star
...Why the hell doesn't he just have that appear on the forums? It's just... Wow

I hope he didn't ban your entire IP range.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
    It is kind of dickish.
  • I'd be inclined to agree. It's a dick move if there ever was one.

    ~♥YES♥~! I *AM* a ~♥cupcake♥~! ^_^
I've made an avie out of that. Wanna use it Chaggy?

    Also proxies.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
That does look like a dick move.  It could at least be more silent.  Or it could be a correctly-implemented wiki and/or forum editing/posting ban rather than a reading ban.
  • Come on guys, if FE didn't take these preventative measures, Chagen and I would be scowling with all our might while reading TvTropes. Just imagine the horrors that could occur if our wrathful gazes were turned upon the text of TvTropes!
  • The main benefit I see is that this can act as increasing the deterrent for behavior that gets you banned.

Going heavier on the stick, if you will.

I dunno about the dick move thing. It tells you what happened rather than outright kicking you from the site.

    Anyhow:

Or it could be a correctly-implemented wiki and/or forum editing/posting ban rather than a reading ban.

What's wrong with the current (non-reading) one?
  • ~♥YES♥~! I *AM* a ~♥cupcake♥~! ^_^
Absolutely nothing, as I see it.

If you don't want to do the time, then don't do the crime.

  • We Played Some Open Chords and Rejoiced, For the Earth Had Circled the Sun Yet Another Year
Yes, snowbull, we know, you were banned for absolutely no reason at all.
  • But you never had any to begin with.
What has always bugged me about the full wiki ban is that, although it's supposed to act as a deterrent, most users don't know that it can happen in the first place.
  • Master Guardian of the Passive Voice
All I know is, there are a lot of entertaining things written on that wiki. And I doubt that FastEddie wrote many of them himself. I really need to be less lazy and get more articles moved over...

Ahahah hah hHHAAHH hHAHAHAHHH GAH HAH AHAHH AHAH HHA HHHA

Hah ha, sorry, I have no idea why that was so funny.

Calming down, yeah, that's sort of a dick move.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
It's a dick move because, instead of merely depriving users of the ability to edit anywhere (y'know, the reason they were banned in the first place), it deprives them of ever using the wiki, a very helpful and entertaining resource, ever again.

Eddie may be of the mindset that if every five google bounces deters even one additional person from causing him to have to deal with forum bull-shit, it's worth it. He loses nothing from their lack of ability to read the wiki, after all, and there haven't been enough google bans handed out to put a dent in the advertising revenue.

(Disclaimer: I have no idea if this is true or not, it's just conjecture based on the fact that FE has seemed increasingly annoyed with forum drama over the past year.)

"What has always bugged me about the full wiki ban is that, although it's supposed to act as a deterrent, most users don't know that it can happen in the first place."

Why the hell does Fast Eddie insist on being so secretive about this kind of thing anyway?

  • Because Fast Eddie is secretive about everything.
  • It's not like any site (except Icycalm's) is very open about banning, it's something you assume people know. "And if you fail to not be a dick, you shall be forever forbidden to even look at this site again" doesn't go well with the wiki's image.
  • Actually, I've seen plenty of sites where they're pretty explicit about who they're banning and when.
  • Most forums I've been to outline a bunch of things that can get you demerit points or similar, with breaking a certain limit resulting in a ban of set duration depending on the severity of your actions.
  • Plus a lot of forums make it obvious that a given person is banned by changing their title/avatar/username/whatever to indicate that they're banned.  TV Tropes just stops the person from accessing the site.
  • Apparently, that's because Fast Eddie is paranoid of giving trolls the satisfaction that they've got to him. Guy has a whole bunch of weird phobias and grudges.
  • No rainbow star
Sometimes I think FE may need to just give up the site to someone else, if only to let his mind finally relax. I can't imagine running the site is relaxing
  • Too bad it's not like real life, where you can stage a coup and overthrow him.

....Well, unless someone hacks into his account, makes an account, gives it admin rights, permabans FE's IP range, and then deletes FE's account so he can't reverse the damage.
