When a trope name just screams "this got renamed".

It's hard to describe, but there's some names that were very obviously created by a TRS thread. Or by Fast Eddie.

So, for the Artistic License pages, have any of them been rewritten yet to incorporate the new tone?

(Dangit, stop that BaronGrackle! No scheming and plotting!)

My FoRKS-ness may be showing here, but:

I really hate this trend of renaming all these tropes to be Exactly What They Say On The Tin.

Just one more fun aspect of the site that seems to be going the way of the dinosaur.
  • But you never had any to begin with.
I'm almost kinda surprised that Critical Research Failure is not now "Artistic License - Research".
  • No rainbow star
I hate how some of the fail ones were renamed

The point is that they FAILED to do research on the topic

^^^ TRS has gotten better recently with making names both clever and clear. Unfortunately, there's this "designed by committee" vibe with many of them.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
^ "Artistic License - Research" sounds like "It is my right as a writer to forget very important points in my own story and you can't fucking stop me!"

Master Guardian of the Passive Voice

So I just went to the main trope page on Artistic License in general. it explains:

"In a nutshell, the writer is aware that some parts of the show are inaccurate. The history is wrong, or the science is off, or something else. Usually, it's assumed the writer Did Not Do The Research. But sometimes they did. Often they know that what they are writing is off, and wrote it anyway."

Hmm. Sounds like all those different categories of "Artistic License - X" really belong under something like "Did Not Do The Research - X". Unless the Fast one has plans for DNDTR as well. That might be a change worth discussing over there. (And I'm not trolling by suggesting that--I think it would actually help tvtropes' presentation!)

EDIT: Nevermind; it seems that the question of logic/accuracy in the title was brought up already. BaronGrackle's Prediction: the trope Did Not Do the Research has less than a year to exist.

    They're somethin' else.
I just want to know why Nakama hasn't been renamed into layman's terms when there are plenty of layman's terms to define it in and it's not exclusive to anime in the least. It can't be the site's weeaboo slant. That's no excuse.

    ... Is it?

It is, isn't it. Tv Tropes is that damn-- ugh.

I'll complain about the -dere family separately and later.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Jesus Christ will perform his resurrection before Nakama is renamed.
  • a little muffled
Nakama has been proposed to be renamed at least three times, and each time it got voted down by a wide margin. It is a terrible name, and I'd be happy to see it changed, but for the moment Fast Eddie is sticking with democracy on this one.
  • I like turtles.
Why Nakama shouldn't be renamed: because there's nothing wrong with or bad about the current name.

Why Nakama hasn't been renamed: because the powers that be are inconsistent in their policies.

    They're somethin' else.
I dispute "shouldn't be renamed". The name itself explains nothing. Its more or less an arrogant vocab word. and from what I heard, not even the phrase itself is very correct or literal/ exact in its meaning.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
I think it means "the act or process in which brothers band together", but translates to "band of brothers."

And I am very disappoint at the fact that most of the Japanese names we have are worse than others that have been renamed (Artistic License says hello), but the Japanese tropes are never, ever getting a rename.

    a little muffled
Why Nakama should be renamed: Because it's a Japanese name for a trope that can be easily described in English, doesn't even mean the trope in Japanese, and isn't even commonly used among anime fans in my experience.

Edit: "Nakama" is Japanese for "partner" or "ally".
  • I like turtles.
The first definition from a quick run through a Japanese-to-English dictionary: "companion, comrade, colleague"

    Seems correct to me.

And the name itself shouldn't have to explain anything.  Leave the exposition to the page itself, and let the name keep a sense of mystery and fun.
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
Kuudere and the other one can go to hell. It's just the anime version of Broken Bird and Defrosting Ice Queen.

@Turtle: So to you the words "companion" and "colleage" imply "as close as family"?
  • I like turtles.
    "Comrade" and "companion" do, sure.

    They're somethin' else.
Alright, whatever. I'm complaining about the -dere family here.

Is it just me, or is Tsun and Yan dere only worried about being one walking talking meme? For a self demonstrating article, it doesn't seem to explain shit. The Laconic page is a godsend, and even then, you're fucking lost.

And unfortunately, the alt names just show that the wiki isn't even trying.
  • a little muffled
"Comrade", maybe. I'm not disputing that someone can be your "nakama" and be very close to you, but the word can just as easily refer to a more businesslike relationship.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
And isn't the trope "Band of Brothers" anyway?
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
Yandere and Yangire do not feel different and resonate a "This is actually about Rena Ryuugu" feel.

Tsundere is essentially "A character with mood swings, except it's a very loosely based character mold to lazily form likeable characters around!"
  • a little muffled
Band of Brothers is a subtrope for when the bonds are formed by facing dangerous circumstances.

^^ I honestly think Tsundere has the highest [I've Seen This A Million Times: I Actually Know What It Means] ratio on the website.

I can surmise that it's some clumsy but lovable chick that's always happy, except when she's not, and she loves everybody except you, or maybe she likes you secretly, or maybe she's not a people person or whatever.

Wait, no, I just checked the Wikipedia page. Guess what?

It's not even a fucking character trope! It doesn't describe a character, it describes the hate you -> love you process! GARGWARBEGARBL
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
some clumsy but lovable chick that's always happy,

    That's Dojikko or something.
  • Master Guardian of the Passive Voice
^^ I just read the link you posted. The first few sentences scream: Defrosting Ice Queen. :-)
  • edited 2011-04-21 15:34:27
    They're somethin' else.
My layman's terms for the -Dere family?

Kuudere: if it's not Defrosting Ice Queen, I don't know what it is.

Yandere: A psychotic lover. That was easy.

Tsundere: A mood swinging girlfriend. That was also easy.

And please, people, if you really must be weeaboo centric, at least name the trope "(what butt fucking ever)-derekko.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Over the story, the hero successfully melts the Ice Queen's cold cold heart, giving her Character Development into a nicer character.

    From Defrosting Ice Queen

    From Kuudere.

Hilariously, it's a subtrope of Tsundere.
