Since it got mentioned in that other thread.
"Alaska was Russian territory? Why would Russia want more frozen wasteland?"
Because they were making money off the fur trade, and the popular thing to do at the time was to colonize everything your monarch could get 'eir hands on.
Of course, after they screwed up the local environment and the local economy and local population, they decided that it wasn't a good investment anymore.
So they sold it:
