Is unpopular, for some reason. Either that or calling it crappy is a meme of which I am unawares.

Explain?

I've never noticed anything bad about it. It's not the ideal video player, but I've never seen one that wasn't worse.
  • It has some video quality issues compared to Media Player Classic Homecinema.

I've never seen a better one, either. If it is believed to be of poor quality, then clearly it is being compared to something.

So what is it being compared to that is just so great?

^ACK A NINJA! So... is that the only reason?

And it's bad at rendering subtitles.

And apparently has issues with 5.1 audio on systems that don't support it.

And it doesn't properly support all of the features of the .mkv format.

MPC-HC is generally considered to be the best for Windows, and probably MPlayer for non-Windows.

    ^^I hate don't like WMP..

    That's said, what is cccp?

^I don't typically use any of those features. Which might be why I'm fond of it.
  • Subtitles render pretty good for me....

CCCP is the Combined Community Codec Pack.

It's a set of DirectShow Filters, basically (so, audio and video codecs).  So it'll work with any video player that supports them, which is... a lot of players (though, only Windows ones, since DirectShow isn't supported on other OSes), but most importantly MPC-HC, which is included in the CCCP download.
  • «That's said, what is cccp?»
Combined Community Codec Pack.  A set of video codecs.

True, I have noticed occasional issues with subtitles "stacking" on top of each other. I assumed it was the fault of whoever made the video.

I've been using VLC for well over two years now, and the only problem I've ever had with it was playing MKV files.

Personally, I don't mind having two different programs installed for different sets of video. The truth is that VLC handles all other video and audio formats just fine and I barely ever use MKVs, and I'd rather have one player that does almost everything than install a truckload of codecs.

I don't like messing with codecs. They make my neck itch.

    (void)
I've never actually had to mess with codecs--CCCP has been pretty much fire-and-forget.

(Also, MKV files play easily on Ubuntu's default player)

That's what I like about CCCP: It includes the codecs for almost every video I'd want to play, so I don't need to go screwing around with individual codecs.

    (or what Poni said)

I still use VLC when I want screencaps, though, because for some reason MPC-HC takes screencaps in the resolution the video is stored instead of the resolution it's displayed, which means sometimes they come out with the wrong aspect ratio.

Yeah, that's pretty much the reason CCCP exists.  So you don't have to mess around with a lot of codecs.  It has all the ones you're likely to ever need and then some, and you shouldn't really need to do much configuration after you install it.

^ The way MPC takes screenshots depends on the renderer you're using, I think.

Can I get MPC to not hijack my volume hotkeys for its own volume slider?

Also, I'm disappointed that no one ma--wait--IN SOVIET RUSSIA, VIDEO USES CCCP TO WATCH YOU!
  • ^ Yes, you can. I forget how, but I know I've done it.

(I think it was in the CCCP FAQ)

I suppose I'll have to give it a shot.

IMHO, VLC is nice in that it's free, plays multiple formats and doesn't try to do extra stuff you don't want like some software.  But I mostly use FLV player and WinAmp.

  • The main good thing about VLC is that it's portable.  So it's good if you want to have a media player on a flash drive or something so you can use it on other computers.

I'd still say you should use MPC or MPlayer if it's your own computer though.
