Have anyone played these games? Specifically the Arcade/PSX versions? Because there was a lot of info in TV Tropes regarding the rest of the series from Leo to Command II, but barely anything specific about the first two. Okay, the first has mentions of the first three bosses and that contraption in the middle of the first stage, as well as the final boss's weakness, but the second one barely has anything mentioned about it aside from the ships caught by the final boss and the battleship armada. Oh, and that it's much, MUCH harder. I actually had to put in plenty of stuff from the first two games myself. Are they so Nintendo Hard that people can't even make it through the first few stages? In TV Tropes, there was a troper who posted in the
Nintendo Hard Troper Tales page that he/she can't even beat the
first stage of Image Fight, yet can make it into the
third stage of Mushihimesama Futari's God Mode, which is bull. Image Fight is MUCH easier than R-Type I and II, to say the least. So are the rest of Irem's games.

The reason there might not be much info is because simply there isn't much to talk about. They're horizontal shooters, what are we supposed to say?
Alternatively, if you can emulate a Playstation you can probably run MAME and just play the original arcade versions, though MAME is rather hit or miss.

The R-Types compilation is also available on PSN, I bought it from there. The quality of the porting is very good, and the encyclopedia/timeline thing is actually quite a nice bonus. There's also an overpriced XBLA compilation (Dimensions or something) which adds shitty 3D graphics and a mode where you respawn on spot and have unlimited lives.
" Image Fight is MUCH easier than R-Type I and II,"
Without autofire, Image Fight is pain.
So, how far have MoeDantes and Glowsquid gotten in the PSX collection? Vorpy, I assure you that you'll love the PSX collection. If you have trouble, both games have a stage select that goes up to the stage you're stuck in, and autofire.
If you're talking about the TV Tropes forum, then I'm RiosRider, but I haven't posted there yet. I did add plenty of info on the R-Types pages of the wiki.
Third level of the first game. Could never get farther than that, and without more hydrocodone I don't think my nerves can handle shmups (the only one I've managed to beat recently is Thunder Force III)
EDIT: Okay waitaminute, everything I've read says that to use formatting you use plain ol' html, but I'm doing that and its not working. What the hell am I doing wrong?
EDIT 2: Oh, there's a "show source" button. Nevermind.
for the first game, I got to the stage 5 boss once, but most of the time, I choke mideway through stage 4.
the 2nd game, no farther than stage 3 but I remember getting farther on the easier american arcade version emulated on Mame.
R-Type is a game where you have to memorize and think about enemy patterns and quirks to win. I know, I've been playing the games for hundreds of hours now and I still can't 1CC R-Type 2! Still, have completed both loops of both games. So, it may be wise to try again sometime, and see if you can beat it.
