Conservatives are screaming about it and how liberals supposedly embrace it, liberals are....shit, are they even doing anything in the first place, and not many seem to have given a neutral critisism/praise of it. I myself have my own secular and neutral reasons for opposing it--I wanted to make a thread on that, but I know everyone would just read the title and scream "IIIIISSSSSSLLLLAMMMMOOOPPPPPHHHHOOOOBBBBIIIIIAAAA!!!!!!!!1!1!1" without actually reading the thread and my opinions.

  • How much research have you actually done into it? That's what generally trips you up, Chag.
  • Actually, it looks like Sharia was a little more encompassing than I thought. I shall need to reevaluate my opinion before posting it.

I was mostly focusing on how Sharia seemed to be heavily discriminatory (especially towards women), have disproportionate and simply barbarous punishments (I don't give a fuck what she did, you do not fucking stone a woman to death for adultery, especially if she was charged because she was raped while being married. The fucking misogyny), and places theology and religious morals in a secular instutution, law.

I don't know about sharia specifically, but I know that some branches of Islam, not unlike some branches of Christianity, take writings of some clerics as religious texts alongside their holy book.

One thing that should be noted is that a great deal of modern sharia in Western countries is focused around the financial aspects, which are pretty non-offensive, and a decent way to manage your funds in a religiously-compatible manner if you're into that sort of thing.

You may have also heard about sharia courts being set up in America and the UK. It's worth pointing out that these are civil, not criminal courts - they do not supplant the existing legal system in the countries in question, and serve as a way for two parties to resolve their disputes if the matter is not serious enough to get the police involved (so, no stonings - the death penalty is a long way outside their remit).
