I am unsure of my heritage.

At least on my father's side. My mom is black, so she's probably from Africa. That's easy. But my dad is adopted, so nobody's really sure where he's from. His orphanage did say that his ancestors are from Poland and Lithuania, making me part Slav, which I'm sticking with because it's cool. But I'm still not sure. And I'm not sure where I can start researching to get the truth... This is kinda aggravating. Though it gave me an inspiration to learn Polish. And I hope I'm Slav, cause that'd be pretty cool

  • Mostly unrelated, but...it just dawned on me that when I know someone's half-black, I tend to assume their father is the black one and their mother is the white one. (Probably because that's how it is for me.)
  • Everyone is always like that...

I guess Where Da White Women At is strong in the public unconcious.

  • I think in my case it has more to do with the fact that my father is black and my mother is white. :P

    Everyone is always like that...

    Not entirely untrue, unfortunately...
  • Well, in Science, there are very few axioms/absolutes, so you are right...

In any case, I wonder if there's any place where I can perhaps attempt to trace my ancestry.

^well, there's ancestry.com, but I've heard it's a pay site, plus it may not work for adoptions.

the orphanage / agency or governments involved may have kept records.

  • I would go to your local library and ask; if nothing else, they should be able to point you in the right direction.

^^ Ancestry.com is good, but yes it's a pay site, and I dunno if it has any adoption-related records.  It might, though.  I can't check because I can't remember my password and I'm too lazy to reset it right now.  But anyway, yeah, pay site.  Though, most of the records on it are available in some form online for free, just it'll be somewhat harder to find them.

Your best bet would be asking the orphanage he's from.  They probably have records.  (EDIT: Aaaaand... you already said that too...)
