  • DYRE: I don't believe that.

I do believe, however, that the author's intent should have slightly more weight when it comes to analyzing. They didn't write that story just so someone could dissect it into nothing but words.
  • Or at least, that's what it seems like from most of the arguments about it I've seen on TV Tropes.  The people who object to it always end up being (alleged) writers who are just mad that it might be possible for people to interpret their work in a way different than intended and God forbid that happen, right?
  • Has friends besides tanks now
I think it depends on which part of the story is being interpreted, and how.
  • As a (self-proclaimed) writer, I see it more as this: I intended to write a story with this interpretation. You can't just barge in, yell "DEATH OF THE AUTHOR", and then come up with some utterly ridiculous interpretation. I don't care if it has supporting text and actually makes sense in some fucked up way--I don't mind that you had the creativity and smarts to come up with it. But it is still wrong.

  • I like to think of it in the context of myths and folk stories, the kind that have been passed down from generation to generation with subtle changes in each one. These stories become alive in and of themselves from being retold so often, and they have meaning and significance in their own context, not in the context of whatever their original author might've been.

So it's like this, if I have commentary on a part of a work I've made, say, somebody asks me if Xer and Xette were ever going to be together, and I say they do. Another person can call out "death of the author" on that comment since it's not in the book, so there is no couple.

okay, hands up, how many you have actually read Roland Barthes' essay?
  • Not me.
