FYI that's a Super Mario Bros. X fangame made by
@Bluesy_Cowgirl.
Because it's interesting enough to do this.
FWIW I've watched Jane's (i.e. Super Lazuli's) stream up through the end of the first world and then some. Though I'll be commenting on stuff that she didn't comment on. You can find a link to this game on
Jane's stream here.
I'll probably be playing in spurts. Like, just now I played one level.
Comments
The readme file is amusing.
Is K.O. your actual initials?
LOL the splash screen is now an official Nintendo page. how ironic
Lol they always keep running and failing to get across.
And Toad keeps on trying to talk to them and failing.
So the alternate jump button is just the spin-jump. Cool.
There's a dedicated button for dropping items?
Yay I jumped to the left side of the Welcome Center!
OH so THAT'S what "drop item" means!
and you can actually beat it
Chrono Trigger boss, Zelda ALTTP explosion sound, Super Metroid explosion graphics.
Cool, I can save and quit once I finish the level. I'll do another level later.
Nice choice of music for an underground area, actually. The reverb fits the place.
Spikes still deal damage like they should.
I'm a little disappointed the ravens can't be beaten by jumping on them like in Yoshi's Island.
New item behavior: dropping an item into a wall doesn't push it onto your position, but instead drops it into the wall.
Haha, this use of SMB2 music with a rocket reminds me of the SMB2 late-game rocket.
I picked up the leaf! Yay!
My main criticism of the game so far is that it has some occasional short freezes. Not sure if anything can be done about it at this point though.
Ah, the door shows up on the floor no matter which side you're on.
Why is the bird saying it's bat country?
Is that you with the wah pedal?
[PsychoMantis] "I see you like Secret of Mana. And Super Metroid. And Street Fighter."
Is that a portrait of Chiyo using Lakitu's script?
And I'm disappointed I can't talk to it.
Darnit, I missed talking to the last Banzai Bill and the last red koopa paratroopa.
Lol, the pink bubbles are water in air or air in water.
Yes, I am a bad enough dude to go through a bunch of levels and stop him, but only at my leisure.
I can't jump up to the sides of this house! Argh.
Crouching on the white block doesn't let me go behind it.
So throwing fire at a frozen enemy is equivalent to one stomp.
Seems most pipes are two-way.
Also, the music really ought to loop properly.
Oops, I bounced off the fire lotus and into a hole.
Okay, later.Oops I reentered the level. Gotta replay it now.Hey look I can jump off the paragoomba and run across the top of the level.
Looks like that one dragon coin can be gotten using a running jump too, even as small Mario.
K.O. is my actual initials.
The title screen "level" where they jump to their deaths actually is in the game, and the Toad will talk to you.
The bird is not a bird, it's a bat, and it's a reference to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
That is indeed me on the wah.
Osaka (not Chiyo) is a Lakitu resprite. This is relatively easy to do in SMBX.
Looping the music properly, however, is literally impossible in SMBX.
Any occasional pauses/freezes are the engine's problem and unfortunately can't be fixed.
The second part of Presto is quite nifty -- you can fall off the platforms into a safe cave downstairs.
The pauses/freezes are sadly really frequent in the Sociopathic Squid fight.
so apparently keys can rest on top of cows.
oh hey i can go left
oh hey it just loops back around
wow these boos are fast when i don't look at them
okay! actually interesting ghost boss! if only i actually mastered the mechanics in this game
ooh, pitch black darkness
OH YOU TROLL BOO TOAD
Also does the green switch in the ghost house do anything other than stop enemies?
Fun fact: I put the water pits in the village as a reference to the ones in Simon's Quest, where you can die in just the same idiotic way.
I also jumped into the big water pit in Docks and Locks just to see if there was a way to get out of it. There was.
You're a good designer, you know that?
It probably helps that each of these levels was revised about 290 times.
yay first star
ooh, 8 stars
lol, insurance fraud toad
lol i guess this is what i get for helping a toad commit insurance fraud
the spike hitbox is slightly bigger than the spike tile
so i can just sit here and listen to Mars, the Bringer of War. cool.
Your ghost hoses are noticeably difficult. This is...actually fittingly scary.
Anyway, the momentary freezes seem to have to do with anytime the game loads a new image.
it's possible for the key to fall on you and cause you to fall through the platform you're on
No, it's based on which way your character is facing.
Fun fact about "Mars": that piece starts off very quietly and then gets very loud, which is not good for meshing with sound effects. I applied a metric fuckton of compression on it and it's still not quite right. But whatever
The star world ghost house is basically supposed to be "Needlessly Grimdark and Edgy: The Level"
it is in progress
it will be continued and finished in due time
