Apparently it's called an ocarina in the Japanese version.
I guess the localizers were afraid it'd be too exotic.
Then Ocarina of Time was released and kids everywhere were shocked when they got round flattened-spherical brown things instead of ellipsoid blue things when they bought ocarinas for fun.
That's what they get for forgetting about the Fairy Ocarina.
