The painting on the ceiling of the U.S. Capitol rotunda.

capital rotunda

So apparently the U.S. Capitol building has a painting on the ceiling of George Washington, surrounded by angelic figures in a fluffy cloud heaven, presented in a fashion that makes him appear almost godlike.

Of course, anyone with even a cursory knowledge of American history would know that this is exactly the opposite of what George Washington wanted.

Seriously, I hate it when people worship "the founding fathers" as though they were the be-all end-all of everything that is good about America. They were great men, yes, but they were just that. Men. Not gods.

    But in all seriousness,

Seriously, I hate it when people worship "the founding fathers" as though they were the be-all end-all of everything that is good about America. They were great men, yes, but they were just that. Men. Not gods.
Yes this is really an obnoxious attitude among (mostly) Americans. See also: treating the US Constitution as some kind of holy text whose contents are right and good because they're in the constitution rather than, you know, because they are (or aren't) good ideas in general.

  • Have you seen the Zeus Washington statue? It's amazing.

  • ^^ You know what was also part of the Constitution? The Eighteenth Amendment, A.K.A Prohibition.

Just imagine what life would be like if nobody ever thought to challenge it simply because it was part of the Constitution.
