Why do people like this so much?

I was at a mixer for young professionals last night.  They went out of their way to hire a DJ, whose music was blasted at extremely high levels, such that people had to shout into each others' ears in order to properly comprehend anything.  It was so irritating.

  • This is pretty much why I don't go to bars.  It's not really hanging out with friends so much as standing awkwardly with friends wondering what the hell they're saying.

    Blegh, it's utterly terrible.

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

This is way, way, worse at a restaurant.

  • The restaurants you go to must have nuclear demonstrations in the kitchen or something.  The kind of noise we're talking about is pretty much impossible to generate without at least subwoofers.
