A4 vs. US Letter paper sizes
I think I slightly prefer A4. Because it is slightly narrower and longer than US Letter, it is more suited for fewer chunky paragraphs and easier scanning and listing.

I prefer A4 without having used it solely on the fact that it has a logical reason for its sqrt(2) aspect ratio.
Despite not being a math major myself I want to support your reasoning.
For some reason the fact that its ratio is irrational amuses me.
Granted, the same could be said about pi.

The reasoning isn't really that mathematical. Basically, if you cut an An sheet in half parallel to the shorter sides, you get two An+1 sheets. For these to have the same aspect ratio, the sheets have to have aspect ratio sqrt(2).
...Ok, yeah, that's pretty cool.
Oh, don't worry, despite not being a math major, I know enough math to understand that.
