Russian is far from being perfectly phonetic, as most letters can be said in several different ways depending on where they show up in the word, but there are fixed and relatively simple rules to determine how.
It has an alphabet pretty much made for the language, which means it does pretty well, but for an example I find it hard to discern when the letter for L is read more like "ll" or more like "w". They've got a sign that helps, but it's not always there when it's needed. Also some words are spoken in a shortened form, but written in the full form.
