Necrons

edited 2013-03-27 10:37:46 in General

Apparently they retconned them while I wasn't looking.

They are now no longer emotionless mindless slaves of the C'Tan, but are made up of multiple warring political factions each with their own style and goals, and the C'Tan are now shards that are enslaved to the Necron Lords. Also they cooperate with Space Marines sometimes.

I realize that this gives them more personality, allows for more customization and opportunities, and lets players develop attachment to various different Necron groups, but grrrr change.

Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

Basically, Matt Ward. That's all that needs to be said.

Edit: Okay to be less obtuse, I have mixed feelings over the whole retcon. On one hand, Necrons as single-minded killing machines is terribly boring unless written exactly right. But giving them individual characters with notable personalities, and goals humanizes them far too much. Which I feel is missing the point of the whole race. Also, the C'tan were stupidly written in the old fluff (basically "the Deciever is behind EVERYTHING MWAHAHA!"), but turning them into Pokemon is equally stupid.

Mechanics wise, this is probably the least bad of all of Matt Ward's codices. It streamlines the army to keep up with the modern 40k metagame without having anything over-the-top broken (surprising for Matt Ward), and gives a lot options to a once slow, one-trick-pony force.
