The majority of Goosebumps fanfics appear to be about Slappy
Why? If anything he's overexposed as the series mascot.
Comments
Why, and where are you find these?
Don't actually answer that.
Urgh. I wish I didn't, but I remember Goosebumps during its heyday. I read like two of them and nearly lost too many IQ points to function as a human being.
Knowing that people wrote fanfiction of it is one of those things that I shouldn't be surprised at, but...urgh.
Even when I was a kid, Goosebumps seemed a bit shit, to be honest.
it was fun shit though
like
there was a kid whose family had eyes behind their head
like
that was they were scary
they had eyes behind their heads
I used to like them when I was really young, but I think I was pulled in more by the cover artwork than anything. But I'm glad I don't remember any of the actual writing. I feel bad that I never had anyone to expose me to decent literature.
I liked them when I was in Elementary school, but I always found them more funny than scary.
There was also these awesome CYOA books that I freaking loved, again for the comedy value.
Goosebumps are not good literature.
However they were fun as a kid, and they're pretty harmless. They also had nice cover artwork. And I had fun MSTing some episodes of the series with my brother. So I'm glad Goosebumps exists.
The one thing that really stuck with me is that at the end of every chapter, something shocking happened, and unless it was near the end of the book, it was generally reversed or lessened or whatever in the first sentence or two of the next one.
Yeah they needed to work on their cliffhangers. Badly.
This thread inspired me to pull out the one that a friend gave me when I was little just to confirm that yes, the writing really is as bad as it had to be to make that much of a negative impact when I was 7 and had no literary taste.
It is.
Anyway, overall impression: I got that the books weren't exactly great writing, but I had fun with them at the time, I guess.
Eh. I guess it lost any impact it would've had even when I was that young because I was already hooked on Animorphs, which was just as cheesy but actually decently written.
Fuck, I always hated Slappy. Gave me a fear for ventriloquist dummies for a long, long while.
I find this thread really funny considering the story I've just completed a draft of.
slappy is a homo
But seriously though, Slappy pissed me off more than anything. I want to kick his ass.
Goosebumps is one of those "I had no idea everyone else absolutely hated them until you said so recently" for me, so this is kinda out of left field. It's like hating those ABC mysteries or Cam Jansen (I'm Canadian so I don't know if you ever heard of those).
I can't even remember any specific ones I liked, though.
I had to look up who Slappy was.
Click.
I once read a parody of the Goosebumps books that was in a library.
It
A: Had a plot that was functionally indistinguishable from a Goosebumps book
B: Was slightly better written.
I...think I remember those.
All two of them.
