I seem to be drawn to blue-haired girls in anime

Why is this?

When Eelektross brought up that he associated me with a blue-haired anime girl avatar, I came up with three.  Then I started to realize that it might be the case that I seem to like them disproportionately more than characters of other hair colors.

The three that I thought of immediately are:

  • Pfeilspitze, Kiddy Grade: a secretary who turns out to be a spy.  She only has blue hair in her spy form (which is presumably her true appearance).  Not much characterization other than this (though I've made up a characterization myself--a matter-of-fact level-headedness, generally, with a propensity to treat situations as strategic games--a combination of chessmaster and support role).

  • Chihaya Kisaragi, The iDOLM@STER: a character who is known for her extraordinary talent at singing, though she is less enthusiastic about the other show-biz parts of being an idol.  Lives alone, doesn't cook well, but is extremely musically-inclined (like me).  Also a bit awkward socially, and tends to take things a rather seriously (but may exhibit an odd sense of humor at times).  Has purple-blue hair.

  • Natsuki Kuga, Mai-HiME: A biker identified as a truant.  Is a bit of a loner, probably out of necessity since her role is to conduct covert operations investigating the various conspiracies in the setting (it seems her truancy is merely an explanation for why she's not around all the time).  Is rather serious, though she is sometimes subjected to situations that piss her off with stupid nonsense.

I guess it's that sort of "serious" characterization that I like?  And it seems that blue-haired characters are more likely to have that characterization?  It's definitely not the Shy Blue Haired Girl trope though, as I actually dislike Rei Ayanami, am not too enthused by Yuki Nagato, and am not the biggest fan of Eureka (though Ami Mizuno is an exception).  Though for that matter I also am not a huge fan of Subaru Nakajima even though she's a subversion.

Maybe this is an extension of the Red Oni, Blue Oni trope, but with just the "blue" side represented.

I've been watching AKB0048 and been wondering whether Chieri Sono fits this trend.  While she's definitely got the serious part down pat, she is a bit of a jerk sometimes.  I was just watching episode 6 and found this gem from her (she was asked "Are you serious?", to which she answered this sarcastically).

For what it's worth, though, my other favorite female characters include Asuka Langley Soryu (red), Schach Nouera (pink), Éclair (brown/purple), Teana (blond/yellow/orange/brown), and Yukari Morita (black/brown).  Of these, Yukari and Schach have a "serious" trait to their personality (and to a lesser extent, Teana and Éclair).  From within the AKB0048 cast, there's also Kanata Shinonome (red), who also kinda fits this personality type.  (Makoto Yokomizo is the SBHG type and definitely not my style.)

Edit: episode 7 akb0048, intro: oh gosh she's so cute when she doesn't give a fuck

  • There is love everywhere, I already know

It probably has something to do with the colour=personality thing, as you said.

Oh, and the image is broken.

    And Makoto's hair is purple.

And you should watch Symphogear to see if the trend continues.

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

Funny, it seems to be reddish-pink haired for me though there are plenty of exceptions.

I think it has a lot to do with character design and color scheme being directly related to personality in animu.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

Only slightly related, but I always relate anime hair colours to their closest real-life equivalent.

  • Definitely not gay.

When Eelektross brought up that he associated me with a blue-haired anime girl avatar, I came up with three.

    hey dude

we both came up with topics that were inspired by what the other guy sad

  • I told you a hundred times Seibah, I don't want you in my pool

GMH, You are the only person other than me that seems to know of kiddy grade.

I guess as far as hair goes, I'd say that Green hair is best. Sanaehair4lyfe#

    Yellow/blonde > red > other warm colors/ordinary hair colors > cool colors.

Though it's probably mostly personality related I guess, yeah.

    @fourteenwings: Fixed the link.

@saladofstones: fourteenwings here does too.  And so does @Midgetsnowman but I haven't seen him post in forever.

  • I'm a damn twisted person
Best hair color - when the hair has been replaced with fiber optic wires that let the person plug their brain into a computer.
  • Has friends besides tanks now

    Black hair supremacy.

  • Ridi, Pagliaccio, sul tuo amore infranto!

    Glenn you have weird fetishes.

Also, agreed with Alk about Magri White; it's stylish as well useful!
  • Ridi, Pagliaccio, sul tuo amore infranto!

    Also, blonde is highly overrated.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

Depends what kind of blonde. I mean, there's villainous blonde and then there's sane blonde.

    Glenn you have weird fetishes.

    This isn't even a fetish; it's a trend I've only barely noticed.

  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean

    Suuuuuuuuure it's not.

  • Tristan: I don't believe you!

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

Oh, come on, you're basically saying I have a fetish for serious girls.  And that's not even a fetish, that's a personality preference.

i definitely don't find Eri Mizutani cute though attribute it to her hairstyle rather than her hair color though why do you ask because i'm not too keen on her super-cutesy persona

  • Chill, Glenn. I was joking.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

Aww, I was hoping you'd continue the joke.

Oh hey, I forgot Eri Mizutani from iDOLM@STER.  Yes, she also has blue hair.

Edit: Never mind, I didn't forget her.

  • If it's dark blue, I always reflexively see it as artistic shorthand for black, because dark blue is easier to texture and highlight in cartoons.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

Likewise. And then I see light blue as black by approximation. Blue is blue is black, or so the logic goes.

  • Transitivity's a bitch.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

Pink hair is where red hair meets blond; purple is a kind of black; green is a kind of restrained, pale blond.

Otherwise everyone in anime would be a punk rocker and that would be very silly.

But then you get vibrant blue and light blue shades, which just confuse the hell out of that idea...not to mention wavy/curly hair as well.  I mean, if you have blue hair and it's straight, you could argue that it's just artistic license depicting east-Asian hair, but if it's curly...

Also, following up a thing @fourteenwings and @DYRE and I were talking about in chat, I can think of another pink-haired female character I find cute (aside from Schach Nouera, and to a very limited degree, Anemone), but that is mostly from her character design rather than knowing anything about her personality, as I haven't played the games she's starred in.  It's Marcia from Fire Emblem.

^ Oddly, I don't find these hair colors jarring in anime, but I do find them jarring in real life.

And yet again, this isn't actually odd at all since you shouldn't expect to feel the same about cartoons as you do about real life.

  • B-but his waifus!

Also, because saturated color palettes work in drawings, but usually not in real life.

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

Real life could use more vibrant colors.

  • That's a nice thought, but as you've already demonstrated like 3 posts above, it doesn't work for most people.

  • I mean, if you have blue hair and it's straight, you could argue that it's just artistic license depicting east-Asian hair, but if it's curly...

Well, hey, you can be east Asian and have curly/afro-textured hair.
