I'll say. It's totally wacked-out and grody to the max.
Vanilla has a lot of little shitty bugs like this. Another big one is the original editors (the plain text ones) having the same element ID, so that when you go to edit a post, the fancy editor gets confused as to which is the right text area in some cases.
On HH we solved the issue by retreating to a Time Bunker.
