I know it's from the in-game lighting formulas.
That doesn't change the fact that this is not an equation. It's an expression.

It looks like a generalized shine term in the shader. I know specular is an approximated direct reflection, and I assume rim is some kind of edge bloom. If k-rim is a negative number you're essentially using the same dot product to catch oblique edges as well as direct reflection spots.
