from what I know
a strawman is a deliberate malicious misrepresentation
in the case that someone does seem to be strawmanning at a glance
wouldn't it be better to try to clear a potential pure misunderstanding first since it's pretty easy for that to happen (even with social skills, you can't read minds, so anyone's going to go off by an impression or guess anyway...as far as I know)
(this doesn't apply if someone has been doing it consistently regardless of being explained to several times in a relatively short time frame, though even in that case it can easily mean they are stupid enough to pull that off by accident)

Unfortunately, for a genuine misunderstanding and a strawman based on the same mistaken assumptions, the only way to tell them apart is motive. And anytime motive is involved, it involves social guesswork.
Is it bad to assume that it's a misunderstanding and try to get them out of confusion before accusing them of strawmanning, though?
