The probably bad lessons in Persona 3 and 4's social links.

They're somethin' else.

I think as a usual rule of thumb, most social link situations (and dialogue choices in general in 3 and 4) mostly boil down to "show concern for your friends/ connections."

However, from what I've played so far, there are quite a few situations that are either the main character yes-manning, telling people what they'd like to hear rather than what they should really hear, or in Kazushi's case, you kinda have to be a dick to him, cause that's what athletes do, in a fraternal way, of course.

But yeah, i dunno. Am I just nitpicking?

They aren't about being a good person. They're about making people like you.

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

Pretty much. The game is called PERSONA after all, as in a face you wear in front of people.

  • They're somethin' else.

    *Marge Simpson hmmm*

    *keeps playing*

And the mechanics support that!  Getting a bonus to social links based on the personas you currently have with you implies that the MC is constantly changing his personality in an effort to appeal to whoever he is currently dealing with (since, you know, it forces you to constantly be switching around your personas in a calculated way if you want to optimize your social links).

  • I'm a damn twisted person

That and you have to be constantly switching your personas because of how their leveling works vs character leveling.

    They're somethin' else.

Okay, that makes too much since now :V

Also, I've got to stop save reloading and just let the chips fall where they may.

EDIT: ^ Oh, that's right. The game mentions you have a persona of their Arcana whenever you're given an offer to hang out.

  • I was sure this was going to be about people getting too enveloped in video games to actually apply the lessons Persona espouses.

  • They're somethin' else.

I've already pointed this out once before, but whenever I play Persona 3 or 4, I usually turn it off after a half hour of play or so and try to hang out with someone for real. Some bizarre form of anti poop socking.

  • I think that's what they were going for, yeah.

I thought it was going to be about being a sociopath who forms and exploits social connections mainly as a means to very literal personal power.

  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

No, it's about the protagonist being the best best friend ever. He is everybody's best friend, and does whatever he can to help his friends. Everything 'bout that mystical power of otherworldy origin is incidental to the protagonist character.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Which is why he's secretly dating several girls at once if you optimize him mechanically?
  • What they don't know won't hurt 'em. Should be a good deconstruction fic out there somewhere, though.

  • You can change. You can.

Nobody said that being the best friend ever did not involve lots of poontang
