He's not the first; I think Raocow is the most famous such LPer.
It's like, these LPers are just talking in order to have a continuous stream of "commentary"--even if such commentary consists of singing about the random tangents the LPer happens to go on in the course of the game.
As opposed to, say, giving relevant commentary about the game, and pacing and voicing it so that it actually stays interesting rather than some sort of stream-of-consciousness thing.

Yeah, I think this might be part of why I prefer screenshot LP's.
Holy crap does he ever stop talking?
That's one of the problems with live commentary, you have to come up with things on the fly. Of course some people just simply have a problem staying on topic. I don't mind it for some, but for others, it gets unbearable.
It's definitely better when they're scripted, that's for sure.
Yeah, live commentary is much more difficulty to make work, that's for sure. Course I don't think it's inherently bad, I've seen some live commentary LPs I thought were enjoyable. Sometimes it depends on the game.
Off topic tangents though, if it's somewhat related, I don't usually mind it, so long as it doesn't go on for too long. If it's too off topic, just stop.
Well I think it's possible for live commentary to work, especially for a blind run like this, if you simply say exactly what your reaction to the game is, and if you're a naturally talkative person who actually will have something to say as you're playing it.
If you're not doing a blind run, yeah, it's best if it's scripted, and either you know exactly what you're going to say and when you'll say it, or you just dub the audio commentary over the gameplay vid afterwards.
That said, I still prefer video LPs rather than screenshot LPs. Screenshot LPs are more like...game reviews than "take the viewer on a journey through the whole game" which I feel video LPs are.
If you're going to motor mouth the LP, though, at least try to be humorous about it, like this:
(Granted, this guy is doing a post-facto commentary--it's quite obviously recorded after he finished, if you listen carefully, as he'll talk about stuff before it happens. FYI the "von Zeppelin" comment references an earlier video in this series.)
I like them subtitled.
No worries about an annoying voice, no trouble trying to comprehend what words they are even trying to speak, and if the comment goes too fast you can just pause the video to read.
I don't really have a preference myself on what kind of LPs I like, I just watch/read whatever interests me. Except for Youtube LPs. Most of those are just terrible.
What's a "YouTube LP"?
Videos like that first one posted. Youtube has SEVERAL terrible LPs cause there's no quality control since anyone can upload whatever they like. Blind runs, footage recorded with camcorders, things like that.
Ah, I get what you mean then. I'm tired and I assumed you meant ANY LP posted on YouTube. But yeah, there is a disproportionately large amount of shit on it, LP's included.
^^ Blind LPs are supposed to serve a different purpose from standard LPs. Standard LPs are supposed to show the audience what the game experience is like without the audience having to play it themselves, by giving lots of (hopefully) insightful commentary on the game and its various aspects (e.g. plot, gameplay, reception, etc.), and humor is optional but recommended. Blind LPs are supposed to show the audience the particular LPer's reaction to playing the game for the first time; this is generally most interesting only for certain types of games, such as platform hell games.
