The removal of menu bars from application windows

Internet Explorer 8 and up.  Windows Explorer (i.e. File Manager).  Chrome.  And now Firefox 4?

I like my menu bars, damnit!

Comments

  • At least Firefox 4 has the option to put it back.

So do IE7/8 and Windows Explorer, but they put it under the toolbar for some reason.
  • But it's so much simpler!

    You like simple things!

It stops your brain from getting confused when you see an interface! It's friendly! It's like the program is reaching out and kissing you. It removes frustration, it makes office work an unoppressive, dreamlike experience! It takes away those buttons you never use and you will only be able to get them back if you pull your hair out, break down the computer into pieces, and hack the system. Only the features you need remain, like photo sharing, listening to music, watching DVDs and playing Farmville. And it can't even do those right.

No, it's not simpler.  (And I know you're being sarcastic.)

I need to change settings.  Where the fuck do I change settings.  It's usually in the Tools menu, Options or Preferences choice.

    I. Don't. See. A. Tools. Menu.

I need to print something.  I'd either hit Ctrl+P (which I hope still works) or File -> Print.

    I. Don't. See. A. File. Menu.

I'd like to manage my bookmarks.  I'd normally go to the Bookmarks menu and choose "Manage my bookmarks".

    I. Don't. See. A. Bookmarks. Menu.

Then I go to Windows Explorer.  I want it to show me the filenames.  This is a folder option.  I go to Tools and click Folder Options for that.

    I. Don't. See. A. Tools. Menu.

    Eh, I don't mind it.

This is stupid, I agree.  Particularly because it means there's less consistency between the interfaces of different programs.  Prior to this becoming so common, you could start up any web browser (or realistically, pretty much any program that has a GUI) and you'd have essentially the same menu bar, and it'd be very easy to do anything using it as long as you're familiar with any other application at all.  Now I have a hard time even finding the menu on some programs.
  • In Chrome, it's the little wrench.  And I only have one menu to look through instead of having to look through «File», «Edit», «Tools», and «Options» because different programs have completely different menu standards.
