People Having a Webcam Feed in the Corner when doing Video Lets Plays
This seems to be a phenomenon recently and I just don't...get it, I guess?
What's it supposed to add to your LP that your voice can't do? Just seems rather superfluous and it annoys me somewhat that it's become a trend.
Comments
Sometimes the LPer may incorporate a bit of physical comedy.
If it's a rhythm game, I'd like to see the person actually playing it as well as the game itself, but... in pretty much every other kind of game it really does seem silly.
The only time I've seen this is that Super Mario 64 LP where the guy played with his feet, to show you that, indeed, he was playing with his feet.
It's good for things like Guitar Hero, not just for authenticity of performance, but also checking hand positioning. And a couple of the drummers are really fucking good.
I don't watch LPs of Rhythm Games, so I wouldn't know that.
I mean more things like Survival Horror games where people put it there to show their "hilarious" facial expressions.
Brian Kibler does this when he's streaming Magic Online, which is...not at all the same thing as an LP, but sort of related. I guess it's just to make it more pesrsonal?
It honestly strikes me as sort of creepy for one thing, and for another completely detractive (is that a word? I think so) of what's happening onscreen for another.
I think it probably works better for something like Magic than a normal video game.
It amuses me more when people post in the comments how much it freaks them out XD
I just went on a Youtube walk watching retsupurae-style videos. Thanks.
The rhythm game point is a good one and one I had not really considered before. I think what Crimson said about Vicas's Super Mario 64 Let's Play was true too. It seems like the webcam part of that LP really was what made it unique.
Still, I am pretty much with Super Lazuli on this since I feel like having someone's face in the bottom of a screen can get distracting. I guess I also have some trouble understanding why people would want to see someone's facial expressions during a survival horror game LP, since from what I can tell, that tends to just mean watching them exaggerate how scared they are. Honestly, it seems to me that the webcam thing is may be more about self-aggrandizement than anything else.
