I can never really seem to complete them, and not filling even one of the nine alignments leaves me all hollow inside.
The only one I've completed successfully is a Homestuck one.
Comments
There was a time when I really liked those, but now I simply found them dull, as well as the whole alignment system.
Speaking of which, there was a time when a geeky classmate made a class alignment chart, and I was Lawful Evil. Another classmate disagreed with the choices and made her own, and this time I was Chaotic Good.
Funnily enough, the closest alignment I would classify myself into (though the system utterly fails at the classification of one-dimensional PCs, much more real people) is True Neutral - probably closer to Chaotic, but too anal-retentive for a CN.
Interestingly, I think alignments are more interesting when assigned to existing characters than used when developing them, despite the latter being why they exist.
^^ show off your Serbian chart. As for the OP, there was Chinese chart in History Thread on TVT, but lacked CN.
I think that most people fall firmly in one of the three Neutral alignments.
This is because Good and Evil in real life are far more complex than in DnD.
I think people are far too contextual to be pegged into something as silly as an alignment chart. I mean case in point group think and mob mentality where people start acting like idiots together because a weird collective thought process, but once they split up seem to wonder "what the flying fuck was I doing?"
And law and chaos are a lot more complicated than in D&D once you start thinking of internal lawfulness vs external lawfulness and personal discord vs external discord.
And I'll agree with INUH. It's mildly interesting to try to apply it to existing characters, mostly because it requires them to be consistent.
I made one that largely resulted in a dumb joke for chaotic evil.
Oh, and for those who are interested:
LAWFUL GOOD
NEUTRAL GOOD
CHAOTIC GOOD
LAWFUL NEUTRAL
TRUE NEUTRAL
CHAOTIC NEUTRAL
LAWFUL EVIL
NEUTRAL EVIL
CHAOTIC EVIL
For those of you who don't know these people (i.e. all of you):
Lawful Good: Zoran Đinđić, one of the leaders of the peaceful revolution in 2000 that led to the overthrow of socialism and the institution of liberal democracy, and the first Prime Minister of post-socialist Serbia. Assassinated in 2003. (I disagree, though, the guy was a corrupt shithead with ties to the mob)
Neutral Good: Patriarch Paul, former head of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Died in 2009.
Chaotic Good: Nikola Tesla, Serbian-American scientist, inventor and mystic.
Lawful Neutral: Milovan Đilas, one of the architects of the post-WW2 communist Yugoslavia, soon to become a dissident.
True Neutral: Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, a linguist and reformer of the Serbian language and alphabet.
Chaotic Neutral: Gavrilo Princip, a member of an anarcho-nationalist resistance movements who assassinated the Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914, which led to the First World War.
Lawful Evil: Radovan Karadžić, a psychiatrist, poet, esoteric sage, politician, and above all, a total nutcase. Led the Serbs in Bosnia during the Bosnian War, and was behind countless atrocities.
Neutral Evil: Željko Ražnjatović Arkan, the leader of a Serbian paramilitary force during the Bosnian War, who later used the money he plundered to get to the top of the Serbian underworld, all while masquerading as a Serbian patriot. Assassinated in 2000.
Chaotic Evil: Ratko Mladić, a Bosnian Serb general. A decent guy who flipped after his daughter died and massacred thousands of people in Srebrenica.
hey man i totally knew who tesla was.
he's bowie, right
also, this is the only alignment chart i tolerate
mostly because of what Alk said about people and contexts
By Santos L Halper:
Lawful Good: Confucius
Neutral Good: Liu Bei
Chaotic Good: Sun Yat-sen
Lawful Neutral: Shi Huangdi
True Neutral: Lao Tzu
Chaotic Neutral: N/A
Lawful Evil: Mao Zedong
Neutral Evil: Cao Cao
Lawful Evil: Zhang Xianzhong
"Kill! Kill! Kill! Kill! Kill! Kill! Kill!" is, funnily enough, an actual quote.
Unfortunately (?), Wikipedia (I guess it's no longer The Other Wiki) says there is a reason to believe it was made up. But if we mean it wasn't made up for purposes of this picture, then AW HELL YES.
I was thinking about making a Polish chart, but couldn't think of enough obvious characters. I'd go this way:
LG: Casimir the Great (alternately LN, he never took no for a woman's answer).
NG: John Paul II.
CG: ? Possibly one or another rebel. Piłsudski?
LN: ? Perhaps another king, like Boleslaus the Brave. Or that Hetman who pushed for execution of CN guy. Hard to find enough Lawful types.
N: ? Perhaps one of the scientific types could fit. Or Wincenty Witos, the Interwar leader of peasant party, so the chart won't be too clogged by noblemen. Or wait, I've got the great one. Lech Walesa. "We need the right leg and the left leg, and I'm gonna be in the middle."
CN: too many options. I'd go for that one guy who got executed by Stephen Bathory.
LE: Roman Dmowski, the Nationalist leader.
NE: ? Possibly "the Devil" Stadnicki, but he could be CE too. Or folks of the Targowica Confederacy (Americans: think Benedict Arnold, only dumber and less competent).
CE: I guess the crazy guy who tried to assassinate the king, but he was likely literally head-sick, so I don't know if I should assign alignment to him.
Doublepost 'cause I made it:
This thread is officially an epic thread.
Whipped this up just now:
Is there a specific site for making these?
Hey, our forum posts can contain tables!
Hmm, I propose a replacement. Let's put it to the test!
Kefka
Unfortunately, I'm not sure how good stories I know can fit alignment charts.
Maybe I'll work with politics in a bit.
Interesting. Tables don't have their own cell barriers. I'll have to play with this a bit more.
One I made after being quite surprised I couldn't find it anywhere:
(The Selesnya are questionably "good", but the rest fit pretty damn well I think.)
^What's that from?
Magic: the Gathering.
The guilds of Ravnica, from Magic: The Gathering.
I left the Golgari out, because there are ten guilds. They'd probably be a better fit for Neutral Good than the Selesnya (though still questionable) but I couldn't find any flavour text to use as a quote that didn't sound kinda evil.
Now that Meet the Pyro is out...
If I tried to map the TF2 cast to a traditional good/evil lawful/chaotic chart, it would be pretty lopsided. No one would be good, and it'd end up something like this:
and the Pyro would be chaotic WTF.
So, instead, let's use a different set of criteria:
One could argue between Heavy and Demoman, but I think that works out about right.
The only thing left is to enshrine this into a poster with appropriate pictures and quotes.
And I still haven't gotten tables to work right.
Nyktos: Probably a complicated task, but can you say where do the quotes come from? (As in, which flavour text comes from which card, I mean)
Left to right, top to bottom: Bathe in Light; Selesnya Evangel; Flow of Ideas; Minister of Impediments; Novijen, Heart of Progress; Tin Street Hooligan; Castigate; Glimpse the Unthinkable; Nihilistic Glee.
It's worthy of note how all three chaotics are part red, and all evil part black.
And all the lawfuls are part white.
Yeah, you're right.
Now I await Alex making a chart for all the fencing masters.
Gacek's chart, and the fact that I don't particularly like the Serbian one make me want to make my own Serbian chart. I've already got two.
For Lawful Evil, we have Emperor Dushan. The man strangled his own father for being "too weak", was insanely ambitious, a sadistic tyrant and a brutal conqueror, but still an incredibly just lawmaker and the establisher of the first independent judicial system in Europe.
For Chaotic Evil, there is Dushan's grandpa, King Milutin. Milutin was an extremely fickle, treacherous and untrustworthy character, famously eccentric in behaviour and a bit insane. Also a serial adulterer (even worse than Henry VIII), rapist and pedophile. Apart from that, he counterfeited Venetian money, which made him wealthy and able to conquer huge territories from the Byzantine Empire, while causing an economic crisis in the rest of Europe. Dante put him in the 8th circle of hell.
And despite all of that, he built 50 beautiful monasteries during his long rule, hoping that it would override his sins and still earn him a place in heaven. I don't know if it was enough, but it made the church declare him a saint. Eugh.
Counterfeiting Venetian money sounds like something that would get you into Heaven, not Hell. BTW:
As for pedophilia I know nothing, but my LG guy never took no for a woman's answer (including a diplomatic incident when he was a prince), invited Jews to Poland probably because the category "Jews" includes "Jewesses", and was a polygamist by law (he just had no patience for all this dvorce stuff). Eh, fun times.
Awesome, the Super Weight chart has been revamped.
Now I can do this.
good neutral evil
lawful Frog,Robo,Ayla King Guardia, Belthasar/Gaspar/Melchior Queen Zeal,Azala
neutral Crono, Lucca Lavos Dalton, Ozzie
chaotic Marle N/A N/A
Super Weight
VIRGIN INCREASED TO 57
