Why am I so anal about my game!?

Currently I am making instruments since, well, what is the likely hood of another universe coming up with the same instruments as us, even if it has humans? I was working on how the one handed hand held piano would work (thumb tilts a bar that tightens or loosens the wire to allow for far more notes) when I realized that I am fucking insane I mean, come on, I'm trying to invent a new instrument. One that would work in real life. Most people would just bloody hand wave it! Instead, I'm trying. To invent. A new instrument. Solely. For the cultures. In my game Please, PLEASE tell me that this is normal, and that me actually planning out a proof of concept to make a working real life version of a fictional instrument is something everybody working on a fictional world does ...Or at least tell me where I can find a musician who is just as fucking insane ;~;

  • Why is this a problem? Go for it. I'd like it if more authors gave thier worlds more detail.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    It worked for Tolkien.

That said, I think alternate-universe humans would wind up with fairly similar instruments. After all, there are only a few main ways to produce that set of sounds humans like hearing, and human hearing has a certain range. Maybe you should focus on modifying existing (but possibly obscure) instruments so that they have the same general idea but completely different looks.

^ The problem is that I was planning on making a real life version (and still am), not to sell or anything, but just to see if it is physically possible

    >.> I go into just as much detail for the creatures, making organ systems to explain all but the most fantastic, scientifically impossible powers. It was only last year that I became more lax due to the fact that trying to come up with at least a semi scientific explanation for how DEITIES are able to do stuff was driving me insane

For explaning deities and stuff, I'd recommend the "Mass Effect" approach. Make a single significant law of physics that doesn't exist in this world. Base everything unrealistic on it.

Fuck it. Can't edit posts on iPhone.

    Comment was meant for Trash

INUH: That is essentially what I am doing for instruments. The hand held version of the piano follows that same basic mechanics, it is just done differently and would produce far higher sounds due to smaller size

As for deities, the universe uses magic. This magic is essentially what holds the universe together. So deities are essentially really good at pulling these strings and manipulating the universe to their needs

You're BUILDING IT? in REAL LIFE??? You are a FREAK OF NATURE. Put it down, and take a look at yourself. Look at what you've become. You are an insult to all creators and world builders everywhere. okay that should be enough.

What did you expect me to say? Really, I think it's a good thing, to excersise your creativity in such a way, as I said, feel free to do it, regardless of whether your selling it. It sounds pretty awesome, if I'm honest

If it's a game, then this level of world building is totally unnecessary.  Focus on the things that actually matter.  That is, the actual game.

Actually, what you're talking about is such a minor detail that I can't imagine it being necessary in any kind of project.

So stop worrying about it and get on to more important things.

DYRE: Thing is, while I can decide on game mechanics (and have. Yes, even the mechanics I want are mostly hammered out), I have no experience in programming

    At all

I once tried to do Hello World. Took me five tries at least to get it right. On RPGMaker XP, which makes that stuff easy to do
  • You don't get good at programming in one go. You've got to practice, man.

Also, I'd recommend using a real language.

^ I know I don't get good at one go. Thing is, stuff like the programming tends to frustrate me too much (which is why I am hunting down a programmer to make my game into a co-op project)
