The schwa: a product of lazy U.S. pronunciation

I'm watching a spelling bee, and noticing how unintuitive

emphysema: instead of "em fi SEE mah", it's "em fuh SEE muh"

metallurgical: instead of "meh tah LUR jih cole", it's "meh tuh LUR jih cole" (or worse yet, "meh tuh LUR juh cole")

asbestos: instead of "ass BES tose", it's "ass BES tuhs"

graffiti: instead of "gra FEE tee", it's "gruh FEE tee"

The "lazier" the accent, the more schwas.  For example, "ak sent" versus "ak suhnt".
