Meh, it feels a tad vapid.
.
Gegh, oh man. I turn over to the TVT's forum for Tropes Vs. Women in Video Games just to see what all the fuss is about, only to NOPENOPENOPENOPENOPENOPENOPE.
Jesus christ, why won't that thing die?
Somehow I'm reminded of that Frank Zappa joke regarding Rock n Roll Journalism, except that it especially applies to Video Games. Damn, man.
What's going on? How bad is it? I'm afraid to look myself.
Ugh, its uh... it's pretty bad. Constant derails, people don't know what point they're trying to make against each other, constant dodging of one another's arguments etc.
My honest opinion? I find it hard to believe this Anita Sarkeesian lady even has a master's degree, given how poorly thought out the arguments of her Bayonetta video were.
I feel guilty enough just watching her videos. I'd never be able to sleep with the fact that I probably gave money to a youtube partner just from watching one of their shit videos.
@ClockworkUniverse: I didn't know you were serious until I watched the video.
Anita's heart is in the right place, but she's got a tendency to speak in absolutes and I don't think she adequately discusses the topics she covers.
For instance, one of her videos is about the trope of "mystical pregnancy", and she claims that it demonises and trivialises the natural process of child-bearing. Fair point -- I think it's clear that it does do that. Sometimes. But who's to say that it does so every single time, or that it can't be used more gracefully? Or hell, less gracefully. Ridley Scott's Alien is possibly the best use of the mystical pregnancy in science-fiction, and much of its horror hinges on providing a twisted, brutal childbirth. And it's strange that Ridley's film was left out of the mystical pregnancy discussion, and the only reason I can think of is because it involves a man rather than a woman. But then again, Alien is a popular film for feminist interpretation, so surely it would pay to discuss it, even a little?
The essential issue is in there. Anita has an agenda, and if something acts as a counter to that, she won't discuss it. The absence of Alien from a feminist discussion of the mystical pregnancy trope is a massive hole in her argument, because it's the obvious example and much of the film's horror is based on the gendered facets of the Alien monster itself.
@Schitzo: What were her opinions on Bayonetta? I recall that some feminists (particularly sex positive ones) actually liked that game quite a lot.
^^In addition to that, she has the classic TV Tropes problem of making a list of things relating to a subject and then saying "well, I sure did a thorough, academic analysis of that subject."
Well there is also the possibility she just isn't familiar with the Alien movies.
> familiar with X amount of schlocky sci-fi TV shows and TV movies
> not familiar with the first Alien movie
> mfw
^^^From what I remember she pretty much crucified it for emphasizing sexuality.
Which is kind of like criticizing a chocolate chip cookie for not being a bowl of cereal.
What about Cookie Crisp Malk? What about Cookie Crisp?
I was pissed when they changed their mascot.

I am realizing that video games are experience goods. In the context of asymmetric information in economic markets.
So, I'm writing something...
What such a vid should have, imho(other peeps in thread have already covered most of these, but meh):
[ ]Examples of succesful portrayal/how to do the trope respectfully(a-nope)
[x]Theoretical backing(only one theorist mentioned)
[x]History of the trope(mentioning the Immaculate Conception, but goes no further than that)
[x]Harmful implications discussed(should have been comboed with the above point, especially since the role of religion in the reproductive rights debate)
[ ]Relation to other tropes(f. ex., the Mystical Pregnancy as related to the Innocent Virgin/Empath)
Pitfalls:
[x]List, lists, lists
[x]Not tackling milestones because not good for a simple argument
[ ]Switching symptom/cause(instead of the trope appearing in pop culture being a symptom of women-unfriendly attitudes, pop culture is a cause and perpetuating of said attitudes)
[ ]Essentializing feminine experience by going too far the other way(in this case, it would be pregnancy as a natural and holistic experience that epitomizes the woman's wonderful place in the cycle of life yadayada)
[x]Universalizing own opinion/viewpoint/experience(pregnancy is actually X)
[ ]Not applying Hanlon's Razor(narrative is perpetuated out of malice rather than ignorance)
snark goes here
jesus, a movie is actually being made
I wish I could write bad fanfic, change the names in it, and become rich. :<
You just have to start watching lots and lots of vanilla kink porn.
Then, make your writing as flowery as possible, make sure to invent an annoying catchphrase (I suggest [Holy X, Studlord!]), come up with absolutely cringeworthy names, add in some rapey and abusive undertones, and throw in about a dozen or so sex scenes per book that make middle-aged soccer moms giggle and say "Oh, my!".
Make sure that the writing is technically perfect, with no spelling or grammar mistakes, so that your legion of undying fans can defend you on internet message boards, and watch the money roll in.
It's a little weird that Anita is basically pulling her style of "analysis" from TVT, which is not exactly college-grade material to call from, and home to people you'd think she would rightfully eviscerate.
Oh, also missed that this was a link. (Also, this would probably have done better in the writing thread.)
That excerpt seems technically proficient, and the imagery is nice (although I had to look up some of the words), but it's so short that I can't offer any meaningful advice.
What is this Fifty Shades of Grey thing anyway?
Twilight fanfiction with the names changed for legal reasons, then sold as mainstream erotica.
Not even joking.
