When my mother rambles about history and genetics and so on
Sometimes I wonder why I even start conversations with her.

That (general) feel. I think most of us have parents that hold questionable views on a variety of topics.
Pretty much everyone you ever meet will hold at least a few views you find misguided, idiotic, and/or abhorrent, and if they knew your full list of views they'd think the same of you. It's a side effect of other people not being oneself.
I had a project in elementary school about the Black Death (I remember Wikipedia being a novelty at this point), and that kickstarted something like a three-year binge on her part into the history of the Black Death, including something about a miniature Ice Age that ravaged Europe at the same time, and that this ice age is reflected in fairy tales and folklore, and that apparently the iceberg that sunk the Titanic was a last remnant of it. She says all this stuff answers a bunch of questions she's had since she was a kid.
I don't know how much of this is true (even if it is, some of the connections she makes with the info have to be pretty wild), but the annoying part is that she's so intensive in telling me about it, as if what was an amazing revelation for her will be the same for me.
...no offense intended, but is she senile?
I once met a guy who could with a straight face say "we need to protect the white race". So you can guess I was mildly concerned. Then I get back home, tell the story, and my Pa's all "you know, he's right".
I think he was trolling me.
