Waking up before the alarm

edited 2012-05-11 05:18:54 in Meatspace

This can either be a blessing or a curse, from what I can see.

like waking up 3 or 4 hours before the alarm. That moment when you wake up still tired, look at the clock, and realize you still have plenty of time to sleep  is so satisfying, at least to me. And because I'm still tired, getting back to sleep quickly isn't a problem.

But if I wake up less than like two hours before the alarm...well, I'll still be tired, but I'll have gotten just enough sleep that I can't get back to sleep easily because I'm not tired. So I lay in bed, just sorta thinking to myself, dreading the alarm, and if I'm lucky I'll get a little bit more sleep.

I especially hate waking up less than an hour before the alarm. If that happens, I'm fucked, because even if I could get back to sleep it would take long enough that it would be time to get up.

  • If I wake up two hours before my alarm goes off, I probably only slept for two or three hours, so I am definitely going back to sleep.

The bottom panel pretty much sums up my thoughts on this. I am not sure that it is so satisfying to wake up several hours before your alarm goes off and know that you still of plenty of time to sleep. I feel like plenty of people have trouble going back to sleep at that point, especially if it happens to be pretty bright in your room. Of course, that might just be a personal preference.

Ditto what Cloverleaf said about dreading the alarm though.

I wake up before the alarm, turn it off before it goes off in a half sleepy haze, and then wake up again three or more hours after it should have gone off

Considering I've done things like turn off a laptop, wait for shut down, unplug it, put it away, and pull up the covers all while asleep, I'm not surprised I've figured out how to shut off an alarm in a sleepy haze

I nearly tackled my alarm clock the other day because I thought it hadn't gone off. This morning, I seem to have hit snooze entirely on reflex, which means I probably need to move it further away from my bed.

My cell phone's alarm is like this:

    * If it goes off, it rings 15 times then stops.  It does not ring again.

    * If you dismiss it, it stops ringing.  It does not ring again.

    * If it goes off, and then you hit the snooze feature, it does ring again.

The snooze button is smaller than the dismiss button due to the way they mapped them.

So the result is that, if you don't care, you simply go back to sleep after the alarm, but if you do care, you wake up at least enough to figure out which button to press for snooze, then attempt to go back to sleep just for the cycle to repeat itself.

Alternatively, you hit dismiss instead and you're simultaneously trying to go back to sleep while also panicking that you're going to be missing whatever you need to wake up for.

It sucks when I wake before my alarm, because it's set for 6:00 as is.
