There are no retrogamer communities

Definitely not gay.

Aw man, where can I geek out about my love for Super Castlevania 4?

Comments

  • They're somethin' else.

I wish I never saw this. I mean, I love Egoraptor and Super Castlevania 4, but now the stupid video is making me want to look up lame ass romhacks of it.

  • Definitely not gay.

I was just about to create a thread for Egoraptor, actually.

  • I'm a damn twisted person

Can't you just look for hipster forums and see if they have a videogames board or something?

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

    > implying hipsters are actual retrogamers rather than having ironyboners for culturally entrenched nostalgia towards the platformers of the 80s and 90s

  • I'm a damn twisted person

Well there is always the thought of looking for a gaming forum but... those kinda make you want to punch your monitor after a few minutes.

  • Yeah I just talk to the same people I talk to for other games.  "Hey, let's play Golden Axe."  "What?  Why?"  "Meh."

  • Silence is golden.

Is this thread a joke, I can't tell.

^^ No, let's play Gunstar Heroes instead.  Because that's fun and I haven't played Golden Axe before.

  • The theater in my town still has a Gunstar Heroes machine.  It's exactly as awesome as it sounds.

    > Gunstar Heroes as arcade game

    Holy fuck yes

  • Definitely not gay.

I mean people who actually like retro games. Not "ooh look at this it's so un-mainstream" people.

You can always join one of those boards and bring the "true retro gaming" influence with you.

  • You can change. You can.

    that's exporting drama, glenn

  • You can change. You can.

Videogame-y drama, even (In other words, the most heinous kind)

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

As a mod, it's my duty to prevent such actions and set a strong behavioural example.

This doesn't mean I dislike the idea of us all joining a cRPG forum inhabited exclusively by bitter neckbeards without half a clue.

It just means I can't allow it to technically happen.

Unless, of course, I don't catch a whiff of it. Because then I could do nothing, see.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my earlier post.

What I meant was, if you, @Eelektross, feel that existing communities are not serving some particular meaning of retro gaming, you can always join an existing community and promote that meaning, and do so productively, such as by reasonable criticisms of games that you feel are overhyped due to nostalgia and promoting games that you feel are both retro and high-quality.

To be honest, I'm not exactly sure what it is that you feel, in concrete terms.  Are you complaining that people over-hype games not based on their quality but based only on their nostalgia?  If so, then my above statement applies.

In no way at all did I mean that we should all join one of these boards en masse to change its culture.  If we don't even have a retro gaming focus here, we really ought not be even thinking about such an action, even besides the rules.

  • Definitely not gay.

No, I'm not complaining about nostalgia or quality or anything. I'm complaining about a perceived lack of communities who can share in my experiences with the Castlevania series.

we were being silly, glenn, that's all

@MadassAlex: ever heard of millercross and chivalrykeep?

(Protip:say no so that people don't suspect it's us infiltrating  their compound)

(people can't radin between parenthesis, right)

@Eelektross: There used to be several Castlevania fans who hung out at #cv on irc.mandog.com, including people like Serio and Jorge Fuentes.  They're not there anymore and I'll try to figure out where they are.

In addition to all the boards I linked to, very large "general" gaming boards such as Neogaf or even the Penny Arcade forum can have fairly substantial discussions on "retro" stuff. The latter even had a lengthy thread about Super Castlevania IV a while back.

    http://www.retrorealities.com/retroreality/forums/

This was founded by people who used to be part of #cv on Mandog.

They have an IRC channel too, #retroreality at irc.geekshed.net.  If you stop by, tell them that GMH sent you.

don't know how to thank you.
