The Canaanite religion.

Oh great, another thing to throw a wrench into my religion. Most Christians I've talked to say that God is the only god in existence.

And yet, this page says that God is only one of over 10 Gods, and simply rose to power (unless I'm reading it wrong).

In any case, this page manages to contradict everything I know. So Christianity isn't Monotheistic, but Monolateristic? And God isn't the only god out there?

wat.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Well, the bible doesn't actually say that God is the only god. Just that His followers aren't allowed to worship other gods.
  • For a second there, I was afraid Falconfly had come here.
  • INUH:...Holy fuck, how did mainstream Christianity fail this much at Reading Comprehension?!

Did they even read the damn book they love so much?

Because you never know what you might see.
If Falconfly had made this, it would be an iJAM thread.  Or else an IJBM: the treatment of the Canaanite religion thread.

The Bible actually does make reference to several other Canaanite gods in the Old Testament.  One of them, Ba'al (which just means "Lord", but he's probably Hadad from the Canaanite pantheon) actually uses his powers at one point, but they're weaker than God's.

Traditionally, Christianity has regarded the other gods referenced in the Bible as demons (which is one of the things Falconfly would complain about).  So no, Christians didn't fail reading comprehension, they just refuse to acknowledge the other gods as legitimate gods.
  • I always thought that Ba'al was just a fake God created because nearly everyone had basically gone nuts from being in the desert for so long. Not that he actually had powers.

Actually, I might be mistaken about Ba'al having powers, since I can't find a reference to that.  So yeah, sorry about that.  I could have sworn he did, though.

"Ba'al", in the Bible, actually most likely refers to several gods.  Like I said, it just means "Lord".

Also, when they made the idol of the bull in the desert, that wasn't them going nuts, that was them returning to an older form of worship, and the bull was God's sacred animal.  I think that's usually interpreted as idolatry, but it always seemed to me like they were just worshipping the "wrong" way.
  • So...this throws and interesting wrench into the Abrahamic religons.

I wonder if I should have a chat with my mom about this, she's accepting enough. Not that I want to convert to Canaanite Neopaganism (I was born a Christian, I'll die a Christian), but this seems like good Conversation Fuel.

I won't ask me dad about this, though. He'll think it's liberal brainwashing or some bullshit like that. Why did you have to grow up in the 60's and 70's, father...
  • a little muffled
A lot of monotheistic religions started from polytheistic systems when the cult of one god decided theirs was the only true god.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
I don't think it throws a wrench into the Abrahamic religions.  So long as Bible!God is the top God and the others aren't being worshipped, it doesn't make a difference.
  • But most Christians will vehemently state that Bible!God is the only god in existence, when he's really just the most powerful and influential of a pantheon.

Hell, I've seen Christians say that Canaanites had nothing to do with Christianity at all. When they get their God from them.
