Knights of the Old Republic completely blew my mind when it came out

edited 2012-04-18 23:16:20 in General

And by "blew my mind", I mean "HOLY FUCK THIS GAME HAS MUSIC AND VOICE ACTING AND THIS GAME WORLD IS HUGE AND BLASTERS WITH RPG STUFF AND OMG DAT PLOT TWIST!", etc. I would've been 9 years old at the time, and I remember anticipating its release, that it was going to be a huge deal.

And now no other game I'll play is going to live up to that level of anticipation.

  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.

KOTOR's twist is one of my favorite twists in all of video gaming.  Probably tied with Bioshock.

  • You can change. You can.

One of my life's regrets is never having experienced KOTOR

  • ^ Experienced it at the time, or experienced it in general?

  • You can change. You can.

    In general.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

I had the plot twist spoiled for me. Oh well.

In any case, it always seemed like a sort of "natural progression" from the other Star Wars plot twist, you know? Like, the same but the next step up.

If you haven't played it, try to find this.  Not only was it a good enough game to warrant buying that collection in itself, but Republic Commando and Jedi Outcast were probably better.

The others...well, they don't take up too much space on the discs, anyway.

My uncle lent me KotOR back when I was 10.

It and KotOR II are both absolutely fantastic, in my opinion. My current regret is that I never beat KotOR I without using cheats or mods. Bloody younger version of myself. I tried it once, but the section I was playing in the Brotherhood of Shadow mod was practically impossible for me to complete, so I had to hack in Force Wave and Lightning to win.

I should go back and beat it naturally.

Also, Kreia. Arguably the best villain in the series, after Vader himself.

    Likes cheesecake unironically.

Kind of reminds me of my early experiences with Link's Awakening. Just not so... much. And without voice acting, of course. And that the game has music didn't actually impress me (I liked the music itself a lot, though). But I was really impressed by the plot twist. I didn't play any games with much of a plot before, though, so I was rather easy to impress. Also, I think I was 8 at that time.

It did, however, taint my impression of other Zelda games. I still like them, but think that LA is the best Zelda game of them all. Even though I think that A Link to the Past is actually the better game.

KOTOR didn't blew my mind, but I liked it a lot. I even played both "routes". Dark side didn't impress me, but I liked the part when you force Zaalbar to kill Mission. Even though I like both of them.

I didn't really like KOTOR II. Maybe it's because I didn't like the characters. Maybe my experiences with KOTOR tainted my impression of it again (really, I think I would have liked it a lot more, if I hadn't played the first game). But Kreia often really got on my nerves. Although now that I (kind of, I never really understood her) know what's her deal, she doesn't seem so bad.

Maybe I should try it again if that restoration mod ever goes anywhere.

  • I'm a damn twisted person

I love KOTOR to pieces, but my one gripe is Taris. Seriously fuck Taris. I kinda had the twist spoiled for me in a bassackwards way when a friend told me to name my character Revan.

  • Taris was a pain in the ass, but I hated Peragus a lot more. I always forced myself to go through Taris, but I eventually just ended up getting a mod to skip Peragus after a while.

I think the problem with Peragus is that things can really only play out one way, whereas Taris still had a fairly decent element of choice to it (whilst, admittedly, the major things always came to the same conclusion; rescuing Bastila in particular), and whilst unraveling what happened in Peragus is good the first time, the times after that just get tedious and boring as you run around searching for equipment and stuff already knowing exactly what happened. The lack of NPCs to talk to doesn't really help either.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

I think one of the strengths of both KotOR games is the virtual social element. While, say Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy nailed real-time gameplay for a Jedi character, they didn't contain much player-influenced discussion. A Jedi isn't just a warrior, but a peacekeeper and ideally a philosopher. Any game which doesn't contain some kind of social interaction with NPCs will miss out on that aspect, but KotOR and its sequel were an excellent opportunity to explore what it was to be a Jedi to a level still unequalled in gaming.

The recycling of the d20 system was a good move, too. As much as I dislike hybrid combat systems such as what showed up in KotOR, that was mitigated a bit by the character building and the combined animations (which BioWare, for some reason, hasn't revisited). I loved that dealing damage didn't necessarily mean one combatant was hit, instead getting a saber bind animation that expressed who took the advantage in that clash. That sort of composite animation sequence went a long way towards making a limited combat system seem a lot more natural and exciting to watch, especially given the speed of the rounds compared to other games and the capacity to sequence moves.

Overall, I think the original KotOR is one of BioWare's strongest efforts, and I prefer it to Neverwinter Nights.

  • Champion of the Whales

I played the second one first so yeah

    a little muffled

I bought the first one on Steam ages ago, but it does not seem to want to run on Windows 7. What little of it I played on those occasions I could get it to run was good at least.

Oh, I was gonna suggest to Juan that he download it there.

There may be a way to get it to work, though.  I use Vista on this machine, which is where I first played it.  I needed to do some troubleshooting, but was able to get through the game after running it in compatibility mode for Windows XP or one of the other old versions (I forget which one exactly), downloading a patch, finding solutions to problems by googling the problem and seeing what people had posted about it, etc.

    Might be worth a try.

Dark side didn't impress me, but I liked the part when you...

Yes, the part that I didn't quote right after the elipses was a MAJOR Kick The Dog.  (I might've said Moral Event Horizon, but since it comes after you've chosen your course for the rest of the game during a certain scene on a certain rooftop, I don't think it qualifies.)

  • Back in Black

Oh god, yes.  I think KOTOR is easily in my top ten games of all time, and yes, that was a fantastic plot twist and Revan is easily one of the best Star Wars villains ever.

I just recently got and finished the second game.  I wish now that we're approaching the tenth anniversary that they'd consider remaking both games, considering substantial content was cut from both and you could do ungodly cool shit with modern technology.  And hell, if they wanted they could even find a way to meta-twist your expectations on the plot by changing some shit around, but I would buy it anyway if they barely changed the plot at all.  :3

  • I'm a damn twisted person

Well they did remake the first Halo game for lots of money. If they think people will buy it, chances are they will end up remaking the games again.
