Ellison is not much of an asshole once you get the complete story. Or at least, there are several accounts of him being amiable when not speaking about his work. It's presumably a public persona with shades of truth of his own self.
Yeah, I think his misanthropy is a bit of hucksterism on his part.
Still inexcusable.
In any case, I think it's a case where you can separate the works from the man.
