The writings of a well-known douchebag who loves writing trolling pieces. Ignore it.
"I have no idea what “The Hunger Games” is like. Maybe there are complicated shades of good and evil in each character. Maybe there are Pynchonesque turns of phrase. Maybe it delves into issues of identity, self-justification and anomie that would make David Foster Wallace proud. I don’t know because it’s a book for kids. I’ll read “The Hunger Games” when I finish the previous 3,000 years of fiction written for adults."
I don't know what this book is about, but I am clearly qualified to simply slap a label on it and call it a day.
Also, I find it amusing that he uses the example of Donkey Kong as an assignment to show that video games and film are mindless and yet classes show films all the time. And after video gamers have generated a model for a monkey virus enzyme that researchers have failed to do for years, I don't know how you can call games mindless.
^What is it with editorials and writers using them as an excuse for uninformed bullshit?
Joel Stein is a humor columnist. Offering serious opinions is not his job. (For example, here is his website.)
What you just did is akin to getting mad at a story reported in the Onion.
amusing
^^Well I don't know the guy and have never read his stuff so if that's the case then I just didn't know.
I don't know if he's making a joke or is just being an asswipe, but either way he has a point. If I could find the article, I would post it. It's about the reason dystopian young adult fiction is so popular; it allows an escape from the control and conformity expected of teenagers in modern society.
edit: the article in question
He doesn't have a point, he's an example of said control and conformity by virtue of being an unfunny tool.
That is a point.
That's like saying muggers make a point about inner city violence by being a prime example of it.
Dude's a lesser Maddox, basically.
Well, yeah, they do make a point. That it exists.
